Bondi fires DOJ employee for obscene gesture toward troops in DC

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A recent decision by Attorney General Pam Bondi has led to the dismissal of a Department of Justice (DOJ) employee, a move that has brought increased attention to reactions from employees about federal troop presence in Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth Baxter, a paralegal specialist at the DOJ, was fired by Bondi for flipping off National Guard members stationed in the city, as the Washington Examiner reports.

Baxter, who held a position in the DOJ's Environment and Natural Resources Division, faced termination on Friday following her actions.

This incident underscores the broader context of DOJ employees being penalized for expressing dissatisfaction with federal law enforcement visibility in the nation’s capital. This termination marks the second such incident within weeks. Earlier this month, another DOJ paralegal, Sean Dunn, faced dismissal for launching a verbal attack and throwing food at a Customs and Border Protection officer.

These decisions indicate a firm stance within the DOJ on acceptable conduct toward law enforcement personnel.

Public reaction, support for firings

Communications from the DOJ have rationalized the dismissals. Spokesman Gates McGavick voiced official support for the termination of Baxter via online social media platform X, formerly Twitter. He pointed to the importance of supporting law enforcement to ensure suitability within the DOJ environment.

Further illuminating the situation, McGavick conveyed, “if you don’t support law enforcement, [Attorney General Pam Bondi’s] DOJ might not be a good fit.”

This statement implies a strong interest from the DOJ in aligning its workforce with its standards for engagement with law enforcement.

The reason behind the National Guard's presence in Washington, D.C., stems from concerns over rising crime rates. The deployment of federal forces, while controversial, has been defended by local government officials.

D.C.'s official stance on deployments emerges

Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington, D.C., has been converted into a supporter of the National Guard's deployment, despite initial reluctance. She now acknowledges the impact that federal officers have had on crime statistics, expressing appreciation for their aid.

Bowser highlighted tangible benefits from the additional law enforcement presence in an analysis of recent crime trends. She remarked, “We know that when carjackings go down, when the use of gun goes down, when homicide or robbery go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer.” Bowser's comments underline her administration's emphasis on tangible crime reduction.

The federal initiative aimed at reducing crime rates has thus far had a mixed reception among city officials and residents. While effective in achieving certain law enforcement goals, the presence of National Guard troops in civilian engagements remains a polarizing topic.

Mixed reactions, future implications

Opposition to the federal deployment primarily centers around perspectives of antiquating local government autonomy and perception shifts in militarizing civic issues. These instances of technocratic disapproval highlight deeper unease with national intervention in local affairs.

Nevertheless, Bowser has reiterated D.C.'s position in favor of continuing the collaboration with federal forces. Identifying the unprecedented reduction in crime, she expressed appreciation, stating, "The most significant thing that we are highlighting today is the area of crime that was most troubling for us in 2023.”

As the DOJ upholds its employee conduct standards, the dual events involving Baxter and Dunn underscore the intensity of opinion surrounding law enforcement strategies and citizen freedoms. As the story progresses, wider implications for law enforcement presence and individual expression come into focus.
