Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was hospitalized over the weekend following a serious car accident in New Hampshire. Giuliani, who was in the state assisting a domestic violence victim, sustained several injuries when his rental car was hit from behind. Despite the severity of the injuries, Giuliani is in high spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.
According to New York Post, on Saturday night, Giuliani was traveling along Interstate 93 when his car was struck from behind, resulting in fractured vertebrae and multiple cuts.
Before the collision, Giuliani had stopped to help a woman who was involved in a domestic violence situation. After ensuring her safety by contacting emergency services, he got back into his rental car, which was driven by Theodore Goodman.
The accident unfolded when Lauren Kemp, 19, allegedly hit Giuliani's vehicle from behind. The impact forced both vehicles into the median of the highway. All individuals involved, including Giuliani, Goodman, and Kemp, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.
Giuliani’s spokesperson, Michael Ragusa, highlighted that the former mayor had not revealed his identity to those at the scene. "No one knew it was him," Ragusa shared on social media, adding that Giuliani's actions exemplified his unwavering dedication to public service. Ragusa further emphasized Giuliani's resilience by stating, "He survived 9/11," noting that Giuliani remains optimistic despite the circumstances.
Before the incident, Giuliani was flagged down by a woman in distress. As he rendered assistance, he contacted 911 to alert authorities, ensuring that she received the help needed. Giuliani stayed on-site until law enforcement arrived to take over the situation, showing his commitment to safeguarding citizens in need.
Following his brief hospitalization, Giuliani is expected to stay in the facility for another two to three days for further tests and stabilization of his injuries. His business partner, Maria Ryan, a nurse practitioner, is closely monitoring his recovery. Ryan stated, “He’s getting further tests,” underscoring the precautionary measures being taken to ensure his well-being.
Authorities investigating the crash have not filed any charges against Kemp or anyone else involved. The focus remains on understanding the precise circumstances that led to the high-speed collision. The cooperation from all parties is aiding in the comprehensive assessment of the event, with no criminal proceedings anticipated at this juncture.
Giuliani's son, Andrew, expressed his gratitude that his father’s condition was not more severe. "Thank goodness he’s doing OK," he shared with The Post, expressing appreciation for the outpouring of support and well wishes.
In the meantime, Giuliani is expected to use a brace to assist with his healing process. While his injuries were substantial, medical professionals are confident in his ability to recover fully.
The accident shines a spotlight on Giuliani's enduring spirit and commitment to service. Having faced significant challenges during his tenure as mayor, including the events of September 11, 2001, Giuliani’s response to the recent event reflects a continuous dedication to helping others, demonstrating his persistent engagement with public welfare.
