Security scare unfolds ahead of Charlie Kirk memorial as armed intruder detained

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a startling breach just days before a high-profile memorial for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, authorities detained an armed man impersonating law enforcement at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, as the Daily Mail reports.

The incident, occurring ahead of Sunday’s memorial service for Kirk, who was tragically killed earlier this month, has heightened security concerns as officials brace for a massive event with prominent political figures and ongoing threats.

On Friday, Arizona Department of Public Safety officers apprehended Joshua Runkles, 42, at the stadium, which is set to host the memorial titled Building a Legacy: Remembering Charlie Kirk. Runkles was found carrying a firearm and a knife, and presented inactive credentials claiming to be law enforcement, though officials confirmed he was not part of authorized security.

He was charged with impersonating an officer and carrying a weapon into a restricted area, and was released around 10 a.m. on Friday, per police reports.

Armed intruder sparks alarm

The detention happened before any secure perimeter was established for the Sunday event, raising questions about vulnerabilities at the 63,400-seat venue, home to the Arizona Cardinals.

The U.S. Secret Service, in coordination with local law enforcement, is leading the investigation into Runkles’ actions and motives. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi stated, “The US Secret Service in coordination with local law enforcement in Glendale, Arizona, is investigating an individual who was observed exhibiting suspicious behavior at State Farm Stadium.”

Heightened threat level looms

Guglielmi added, “The individual is not a member of authorized law enforcement working the event and is currently in custody.”

Authorities are also monitoring several threats of unknown credibility ahead of the memorial, prompting the Department of Homeland Security to designate the event as a Level 1 Special Event, the highest security rating.

Law enforcement is preparing on a scale comparable to a Super Bowl, deploying reinforcements, bomb squads, and tactical units to ensure safety during the Sunday service, set to begin at 11 a.m. with doors opening at 8 a.m.

Star-studded tribute planned

The memorial for Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University during his “American Comeback” tour, will feature an array of prominent speakers and performers.

Speakers include Erika Kirk, Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Susie Wiles, Marco Rubio, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Pete Hegseth, Tulsi Gabbard, Donald Trump Jr., Tucker Carlson, Stephen Miller, and Sergio Gor, while Christian artists like Chris Tomlin and Brandon Lake will perform.

Guests are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue attire, and will undergo strict security screenings, including metal detectors and pat-downs, with items like weapons and alcohol strictly prohibited at the stadium, expandable to 73,000 seats at capacity.

Investigation continues

Meanwhile, the investigation into Kirk’s death continues, with suspected killer Tyler Robinson, 22, arrested on Sept. 12 and facing seven charges, including aggravated murder and witness tampering, after a court appearance on Sept. 17.

Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty due to the gravity of the crime, though Robinson has not yet entered a plea in the ongoing case.

As the memorial approaches, the focus remains on honoring Kirk’s life while ensuring the safety of thousands expected to attend, including national leaders, under the shadow of recent security breaches and lingering threats.
