A shocking breach of private information has thrust Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s gubernatorial campaign into the spotlight, as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries calls for a criminal investigation, as the Washington Examiner reports. The National Archives inadvertently released sensitive details about Sherrill, a New Jersey congresswoman running for governor. The incident has raised questions about privacy protocols and political motivations.
The unauthorized release of Sherrill’s personal records by the National Archives, including her Social Security number and military evaluations, has prompted Jeffries to demand accountability.
Due to a procedural error at the National Personnel Records Center, Nicholas De Gregorio, linked to Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli, received sensitive records of Naval Academy graduate Sherrill on June 30, including her Social Security number, addresses, life insurance details, and performance evaluations. Sherrill is now managing the fallout from this breach during her campaign. De Gregorio expressed shock at receiving such sensitive information.
“When I saw [Sherrill's] Social (Security number), I was shocked,” De Gregorio said. He insisted his actions were not politically motivated. The records were obtained following a report on a 1994 Naval Academy cheating scandal.
The 1994 scandal, which did not implicate Sherrill, led to her punishment for nondisclosure. Sherrill has emphasized her military service as a cornerstone of her campaign. The release of her records has reignited scrutiny of her Naval Academy background.
Grace McCaffrey, a National Archives spokesperson, called the breach a rare but serious mistake. “The technician should NOT have released the entire record,” McCaffrey said. The agency has since contacted Sherrill’s office to apologize.
McCaffrey stressed that the National Archives is taking steps to prevent future breaches. “The National Archives takes this breach of privacy very seriously,” she said. The agency is reviewing its protocols to ensure better protection of personal data.
Jeffries has been vocal in his support for Sherrill, condemning the breach as a violation of law. “It is outrageous that Donald Trump and his administration, and political hacks connected to them, continue to violate the law,” he said. He vowed that those responsible would face consequences.
“Mikie Sherrill is a patriot and a hero,” Jeffries added. His call for a criminal investigation has intensified the political stakes. The incident has drawn attention to the handling of sensitive government records.
Sherrill, a Democrat, is locked in a tight race for New Jersey governor. A recent poll shows her tied with Ciattarelli at 43% each. However, Sherrill holds a slight lead in the average of recent polls.
Sherrill has accused her opponent of exploiting the situation. “Jack continues to try and use any avenue he can to execute the MAGA playbook of smearing military service,” she said. She has defended her record and service vigorously.
Eric Arpert, a spokesperson for Ciattarelli, called for transparency in the matter. “The people of New Jersey deserve complete and total transparency,” Arpert said. The statement reflects the heated nature of the gubernatorial race.
The breach has added a layer of complexity to Sherrill’s campaign. Her military background, once a strength, is now under scrutiny due to the leaked records. The incident has sparked debate about privacy and political ethics.
De Gregorio’s connection to Ciattarelli has raised questions about the breach’s implications. While De Gregorio denies political motives, the timing of the release has fueled speculation. The National Archives’ error has amplified these concerns.
As the investigation unfolds, Sherrill continues to focus on her campaign. The breach has not derailed her momentum, but it has highlighted vulnerabilities in handling sensitive data. New Jersey voters are watching closely as the race intensifies.
