Fetterman warns of rising left-wing violence trends

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Sen. John Fetterman is calling attention to rising political violence from the left while urging his own party to moderate its language.

According to Breitbart, the Pennsylvania Democrat shared research showing left-wing terrorism has reached a 30-year high and criticized fellow Democrats for using terms like "Hitler" and "fascist" to describe political opponents. Fetterman warned that such "unchecked extreme rhetoric" could lead to more violent outcomes.

The senator emphasized that "political violence is always wrong — no exceptions" and called on everyone to "turn the temperature down." His post on X included a screenshot of an Axios article highlighting the concerning trend in domestic terrorism.

Study Reveals Shift in Political Violence Patterns

Research from the Center for Strategic & International Studies examined 750 domestic attacks and plots between January 1994 and July 2025. The data showed a notable shift in the first half of 2025, with far-right violence decreasing significantly while left-wing attacks increased.

The study found that left-wing extremists carried out 41 attacks since 2016, compared to 152 from the far right during the same period. However, at least five left-wing plots or attacks were recorded in the first half of 2025, compared to just one right-wing attack.

The research compiled by CSIS analyzed incidents occurring through July 4, 2025, revealing a dramatic reversal in typical patterns. Far-right violence, which has historically been more frequent, showed a significant decrease during the first six months of this year.

Death Toll Comparisons Across Ideological Lines

While left-wing attacks have increased in frequency, the study revealed differences in lethality across ideological categories. Left-wing violence has killed 13 people over the past decade, according to the research.

By comparison, right-wing attacks resulted in 112 deaths and jihadist violence caused 82 deaths during the same timeframe. The data highlights both the rising frequency of left-wing incidents and the varying levels of violence across different extremist movements.

These statistics demonstrate that while left-wing terrorism is becoming more common, other forms of extremist violence have historically proven more deadly. The shift in attack frequency, however, represents a concerning trend that researchers are monitoring closely.

Kirk Assassination Highlights Escalating Tensions

The study's release follows the September 10 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. The incident occurred while Kirk was participating in a question-and-answer event with students.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that bullet casings from the rifle used in the attack were etched with messages including "Hey fascist! Catch!"

This detail underscored the connection between violent rhetoric and actual violence that Fetterman warned about.

Democrats Continue Using Inflammatory Language

Despite the assassination and Fetterman's warnings, some Democratic leaders have continued using inflammatory language. California Governor Gavin Newsom recently attacked White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, calling him "a fascist" in public statements.

The incident has intensified discussions about the role of political rhetoric in motivating violence. Fetterman's criticism of his own party's language represents a rare moment of self-reflection among Democrats regarding their messaging tactics.

The Pennsylvania senator's willingness to challenge his own party on this issue sets him apart from many Democratic officials. His call for moderation comes at a time when political divisions continue to deepen across the nation.
