New York AG Letitia James faces scrutiny over political targeting

Reading Time: 3 minutes

CNN's senior legal analyst has dropped a pointed critique of New York Attorney General Letitia James, accusing her of double standards in her stance against political retribution.

As reported by The Daily Caller, Elie Honig, speaking on "CNN News Central," highlighted James' recent condemnation of political weaponization while noting her own history of targeting President Donald Trump for political gain.

Her remarks, made during a campaign event for a New York City mayoral nominee, come on the heels of her indictment for alleged mortgage fraud tied to a Virginia property purchase, raising questions about her credibility on the issue.

History of Political Targeting on Both Sides

Honig didn’t hold back, stating, "There’s quite a bit of hypocrisy at play here," pointing to James’ campaign promises to go after Trump and her fundraising off that pledge. He acknowledged Trump’s own social media attacks on James and the replacement of prosecutors who hesitated to charge her, suggesting a clear pattern of political retribution from both camps.

James pursued a civil lawsuit against Trump and his organization in September 2022, claiming he inflated his net worth by billions to secure favorable loans. That case, initially resulting in a $355 million penalty, was largely overturned by a liberal appeals court in August 2025, undercutting her legal triumph.

While Trump’s actions against James appear retaliatory, her own track record of singling him out for prosecution smells of the same partisan playbook. The irony isn’t lost on anyone paying attention to this legal tug-of-war.

James’ Indictment Adds a New Layer

Now, James faces her own legal battle, indicted by a federal grand jury for bank fraud and false statements related to a $109,600 loan for a Virginia home in August 2020. The charges allege she violated terms requiring the property to be a secondary residence, not a rental or shared ownership.

Honig cautioned that James’ public comments, like those made Monday night at a rally for Zohran Mamdani, could be used against her in court. Her speech, urging supporters to defend every norm and rule of law while the crowd chanted, "We love Tish," seems tone-deaf given her own alleged missteps.

Speaking out during an active case is a risky move, especially when her words aren’t even tied to the specifics of the mortgage fraud allegations. It’s hard to see this as anything but a bid to rally support rather than address the charges head-on.

A Cycle of Retribution Undermines Trust

Honig’s critique cuts deeper when he notes, "They’re both wrong. They both targeted each other and one does not validate the other." This mutual political vendetta between James and Trump erodes faith in public institutions meant to serve justice, not personal grudges.

James’ supporters might argue she’s a victim of Trump’s influence, but her prior actions—running on a platform to take him down—make that defense ring hollow. When both sides play the same game, the public is left wondering who, if anyone, prioritizes fairness over power.

This isn’t just a legal spat; it’s a symptom of a broader culture where political scores are settled under the guise of justice. The sooner leaders on all sides drop the hypocrisy, the better chance we have of restoring some semblance of trust.

Breaking the Partisan Legal Warfare

James’ call to protect norms and laws at the campaign event feels like a scripted plea, especially when her own lawsuit against Trump was gutted by an appeals court. If she’s serious about ending political retribution, a good start would be reflecting on her own contributions to this toxic cycle.

Meanwhile, Trump’s apparent push to oust reluctant prosecutors in James’ case only fuels the perception of a justice system weaponized for personal gain. Both figures have mud on their hands, and neither can claim the moral high ground with a straight face.

What we’re witnessing is a dangerous precedent where legal battles become extensions of political campaigns, not pursuits of truth. It’s time for accountability, not just in courtrooms, but in how elected officials wield their power—otherwise, the rule of law becomes just another casualty of partisan warfare.
