Des Moines School Board leader withdraws from Senate race amid superintendent scandal

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Jackie Norris, the Des Moines Public School Board chair who once served as an aide to Michelle Obama, just pulled the plug on her U.S. Senate campaign in Iowa, as Fox News reports, and the drama surrounding a former superintendent’s shady past is the undeniable culprit.

This bombshell decision, announced on Thursday, comes hot on the heels of intense criticism over Norris’s handling of a scandal involving Ian Andre Roberts, a former superintendent with a criminal record and unauthorized immigration status, whose hiring has raised serious questions about the board’s vetting process.

Let’s rewind to July 2023, when the Des Moines Public School Board, under Norris’s leadership, brought Roberts on as superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district, despite knowing he falsely claimed a degree from Morgan State University on his resume.

Unpacking superintendent's troubled history

What the board may not have known -- or at least, what remains unclear -- is that Roberts was living and working in the U.S. without legal authorization, having returned from Guyana in 1999 after prior legal troubles involving theft and drugs.

Roberts’ rap sheet doesn’t stop there; federal records show he overstayed visas multiple times, faced deportation orders in 2004 and 2024, and racked up convictions in 2012 for reckless driving and speeding in Maryland, alongside weapons charges in 2020.

Things came to a head on Sept. 26, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Roberts after a brief car chase, allegedly finding a gun, a hunting knife, and $3,000 in cash in his vehicle -- hardly the kind of luggage you’d expect from a school leader.

Resignation, fallout ensue

Just days later, on Sept. 30, Roberts tendered his resignation, but the damage was already done, leaving the community reeling and the school board scrambling to explain how this slipped through the cracks.

Norris, a Democrat and former chief of staff to Michelle Obama, found herself in hot water for pushing what she called “radical empathy” toward Roberts. It's a stance that didn’t sit well with many who see it as prioritizing feelings over accountability in a role shaping young minds.

Enter Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) Norris’ Senate race opponent, who didn’t mince words, stating she “can't even run the bare minimum of hiring standards at the Des Moines Public Schools,” while demanding Norris step down from both her board role and the campaign.

Norris’ defense, campaign exit

Norris finally bowed out of the Senate race, claiming the “superintendent crisis” required her undivided focus as board chair, while lamenting that it put her “in the crosshairs of vicious and coordinated attacks,” as she described in her announcement.

She doubled down, saying, “It’s clear I need to focus on the work at hand: leading the board through this transition, working to support the passage of the Reimagining Education bond, and fully participating in ongoing investigations to get the answers our community deserves.”

While Norris paints herself as a noble servant stepping back for the greater good, one has to wonder if “radical empathy” clouded judgment when hiring a superintendent with a resume more suited for a crime novel than a classroom.

Accountability questions linger

The school board, meanwhile, has stayed mum, offering no immediate response to inquiries from Fox News Digital, and Norris’ office has declined further comment, leaving parents and taxpayers to piece together this mess on their own.

Here’s the rub: while empathy has its place, leadership demands discernment, especially when entrusted with the safety and education of children, and this saga shows what happens when progressive ideals clash with the hard realities of governance.

With Roberts also holding active voter status as a registered Democrat in Maryland despite his unauthorized status, and facing charges for firearm possession as an illegal alien, this isn’t just a local embarrassment. It’s a glaring spotlight on systemic failures that conservatives have long warned about regarding lax oversight and border policies.
