House Oversight Committee chief demands Clintons appear for Epstein questioning

Reading Time: 3 minutes

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) is throwing down the gauntlet, demanding that Bill and Hillary Clinton show up in person to answer questions about the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking scandal, as Fox News reports.

In a nutshell, Comer is pushing for the former president and secretary of State to comply with subpoenas for depositions as part of a deep dive into Epstein’s criminal network.

Back in August, Comer first issued the call for the Clintons to appear before his committee for face-to-face testimony. This wasn’t a casual invite—it’s a subpoena, and he’s not playing games.

Comer Rejects Written Responses from Clintons

On Nov. 3, the Clintons’ attorney, David Kendall, floated the idea of submitting written answers instead of showing up in person. Comer shot that down faster than a progressive policy at a MAGA rally, calling it unacceptable.

Comer’s warning was crystal clear: dodging these in-person depositions could land the Clintons in hot water with potential contempt of Congress proceedings. If they think they can sidestep accountability, they’ve got another thing coming.

The dates are set -- Bill Clinton is slated to testify on Dec. 17, with Hillary Clinton following the next day on Dec. 18. Will they show, or will this turn into a legal showdown? The clock is ticking.

Epstein Files Transparency Act Fuels Probe

This push for testimony comes on the heels of President Donald Trump signing the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a law compelling the Justice Department to unseal all unclassified records tied to Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. It’s a move many conservatives see as a long-overdue step toward truth, especially when the elite often seem to escape scrutiny.

The legislation doesn’t mess around, mandating the release of files on individuals named in Epstein’s legal cases, trafficking allegations, internal DOJ communications, and even details surrounding his mysterious death. If there’s dirt to be found, this act aims to unearth it.

Adding fuel to the fire, over 20,000 pages of Epstein documents were released by Republicans on Nov. 12, while Democrats countered with three emails from Epstein’s estate mentioning Trump. These documents, though authentic, contain unverified claims, and notably, they don’t accuse Trump of any wrongdoing -- just a mention by Epstein.

Clintons’ Epstein Connection Under Scrutiny

Bill Clinton’s name pops up in some of these newly released documents, though a 2015 email from Epstein himself claims Clinton “NEVER EVER” visited the infamous island. Clinton has admitted to traveling on Epstein’s jet but insists he never set foot on that island, and he’s expressed regret over even knowing the disgraced financier in his 2024 memoir, Citizen.

Importantly, no accusations of wrongdoing have been leveled against Bill Clinton in connection with Epstein. Still, Comer and many on the right argue that if you’ve got nothing to hide, sitting for a deposition shouldn’t be a problem.

Comer didn’t mince words in his letter to Kendall, stating, “Given their history with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, any attempt by the Clintons to avoid sitting for a deposition would be in defiance of lawful subpoenas and grounds to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings.” That’s a polite but pointed jab -- if you’re dodging, what are you hiding?

Transparency vs. Stonewalling in Epstein Case

Kendall, on the other hand, seems to think written responses should suffice, saying, “Former President Clinton and former Secretary Clinton welcome legitimate oversight in this matter that is grounded in fact.” He adds that they have little to contribute beyond what can be put on paper, but isn’t that for the committee to decide?

For many conservatives, this feels like another case of the establishment trying to skirt accountability while the public demands answers about Epstein’s network of powerful connections. The survivors of Epstein’s crimes deserve transparency, not excuses, and Comer seems determined to deliver it.

As Comer also noted, “The Committee looks forward to confirming their appearance and remains committed to delivering transparency and accountability for the survivors of Epstein’s heinous crimes and for the American people.” It’s a reminder that this isn’t just about politics -- it’s about justice for those who suffered under Epstein’s shadow, and no one should be above answering questions.
