MyPillow's Mike Lindell aims to unseat Minnesota Governor Walz

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Mike Lindell, the well-known MyPillow CEO and staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, has thrown his hat into the ring for a political showdown in Minnesota.

Lindell, 64, filed paperwork to challenge sitting Governor Tim Walz, a former vice presidential candidate, in a bid for Minnesota’s top office, the Daily Mail reported.

With a press conference slated for next week to elaborate on his plans, Lindell is gearing up to take on a crowded field of Republican contenders. His name carries weight, not just from pillow ads, but from a fierce loyalty to Trump and a vocal stand on election integrity.

Lindell’s Journey from Business to Politics

Born in Mankato and raised near Minneapolis in Chaska and Carver, Lindell’s early life was marked by personal struggles, including gambling and cocaine addiction. He’s been open about hitting rock bottom in the 1990s with crack use, foreclosures, and a divorce, before finding redemption through faith in 2009.

His turnaround story fueled the creation of the Lindell Foundation, a nonprofit initially aimed at helping addicts but later expanding to support cancer patients and veterans. It’s a narrative of resilience that could resonate with voters tired of polished, career politicians.

Lindell first dipped into politics after meeting Trump in 2016 at Trump Tower, an encounter he called a “divine appointment.” That moment sparked a public alliance, with Lindell speaking at rallies and attending debates, cementing his role as a Trump loyalist.

Election Claims and Legal Battles

After Trump’s 2020 election loss, Lindell emerged as a leading voice alleging fraud tied to Dominion Voting Machines, claiming they skewed results toward Joe Biden. Federal courts dismissed his claims in 2022, and now he faces a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit from Dominion, which argues he spread falsehoods for profit.

Dominion also linked his election rhetoric to spikes in MyPillow sales, painting a picture of opportunism. Separately, Lindell was ordered to pay $2.3 million to former Dominion employee Eric Coomer for defamation, a hefty price for unproven assertions.

These legal tangles don’t seem to deter him, though. If anything, they fuel his image as a fighter against what many see as a rigged system, even if the evidence hasn’t held up in court.

Minnesota’s Troubling Headlines

As Lindell eyes the governor’s mansion, Minnesota is grappling with a scandal involving allegations of tax funds being funneled to al Shabaab, a terrorist group tied to al Qaeda. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pointed fingers at “feckless mismanagement” by the Biden administration and Governor Walz, as reported in the story.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has launched an investigation into these claims, adding heat to an already tense political climate. For Lindell, this could be ammunition to argue that Walz’s leadership has left the state vulnerable to serious missteps.

Bessent’s sharp critique of Walz as part of the problem might strike a chord with Minnesotans frustrated by bureaucratic failures. Lindell could position himself as the outsider ready to clean house, free from the baggage of entrenched political games.

A Crowded Race and a Bigger Vision

Beyond MyPillow, Lindell runs LindellTV, a far-right media platform launched in 2021, giving him a direct line to a dedicated audience. That megaphone, paired with his business success, sets him apart from typical candidates, even in a packed Republican field including Lisa Demuth, Scott Jensen, and Kendall Qualls.

His past, from addiction to recovery, offers a personal story that could cut through the noise of policy debates. Voters might see in him a man who’s battled real demons, not just political ones, and come out stronger.

Lindell’s run against Walz is more than a long shot; it’s a test of whether a Trump-aligned, controversy-laden figure can sway a state with deep progressive roots. Win or lose, his campaign will likely keep Minnesota in the spotlight, stirring debates about leadership, accountability, and the direction of governance in tough times.
