Democratic lawmakers launch impeachment efforts against Hegseth and Kennedy Jr.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A pair of Michigan Democrats have stepped out of line with party brass, targeting two of President Trump’s key Cabinet members with impeachment articles that carry more political theater than legal weight.

On Tuesday, Congressman Shri Thanedar from Michigan unveiled impeachment articles against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for 'murder' tied to military strikes, while Congresswoman Haley Stevens targeted Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday, the Daily Mail reported.

These moves defy House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who just last week acknowledged the futility of such efforts under a Republican-controlled Congress. They seem less about results and more about grandstanding for restless constituents.

Thanedar’s Bold Strike Against Hegseth

Thanedar’s accusation of 'murder' against Hegseth stems from U.S. military actions abroad, which he labeled in a video as 'not just reprehensible, but illegal as well.' Such charged language feels more suited to a protest rally than a serious legal challenge, especially when his own party recoiled from his earlier attempt to impeach Trump himself.

The Department of War fired back swiftly through Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson, who said, 'While Shri tries to win points with his base to fend off his political opponents, Secretary Hegseth will continue to protect the homeland.' That retort cuts to the core, painting Thanedar’s stunt as a distraction from the administration’s focus on national security.

With no backing from Democratic leadership and a history of failed impeachment gambits, Thanedar’s latest move looks like a desperate bid for relevance. It’s hard to see this as anything but noise when the votes simply aren’t there.

Stevens Targets Kennedy with Health Claims

Hours after Thanedar’s announcement, Haley Stevens joined the fray, posting a video declaring impeachment articles against Robert Kennedy Jr., claiming, 'RFK Jr. has turned his back on science, on public health and on the American people under his watch.' Her words drip with campaign rhetoric, especially as she’s eyeing a Senate seat, turning a policy disagreement into a moral crusade.

Stevens doubled down, stating, 'I cannot, and I will not stand by while one man dismantles decades of medical progress.' Yet, accusing Kennedy of 'abuse of authority' feels like a stretch when her own announcement reeks of political opportunism rather than substantive critique.

HHS Press Secretary Emily Hilliard didn’t mince words, calling it a 'partisan theatric designed to elevate standing in a failing, third-rate Senate bid.' That sharp jab highlights what many suspect: Stevens is less concerned with health policy and more with scoring points for her campaign.

Democratic Leadership Stands Apart

These rogue actions come despite clear signals from House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who admitted impeachment efforts are dead on arrival with Republicans holding the reins. His blunt assessment last week undercuts any notion that Thanedar or Stevens are acting with party blessing.

Jeffries noted during a press conference that Republicans 'will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor of the House of Representatives.' His words lay bare the reality that these stunts are symbolic at best, futile at worst.

Without the numbers or leadership support, these Michigan lawmakers are shouting into the wind. Their energy might be better spent crafting policies that could actually pass muster in a divided Congress.

A Pattern of Pointless Posturing

Both Thanedar and Stevens have a track record of pushing divisive moves that alienate even their own allies, as seen in Thanedar’s failed Trump impeachment earlier this year. Such repeated overreaches suggest a pattern of prioritizing headlines over governance.

Their current targets, Hegseth and Kennedy, remain focused on their mandates, whether it’s securing the nation or reforming health policy, while these impeachment articles gather dust. If anything, this saga exposes a deeper fracture within Democratic ranks between pragmatists and performers.

In the end, these dueling impeachment bids amount to little more than political fireworks, dazzling for a moment but leaving no lasting mark. Americans deserve leaders who tackle real issues, not ones who chase applause with empty gestures.
