AOC's campaign splurges nearly $50K on luxury Puerto Rico stays

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's campaign dropped a hefty sum on upscale venues in Puerto Rico this summer, raising eyebrows about priorities when grassroots struggles are so often her public rallying cry.

Between June and September, the campaign shelled out close to $50,000 in Puerto Rico alone, with over $15,000 going to luxury stays at San Juan’s Hotel Palacio Provincial and Hotel El Convento, plus $10,500 on high-end catering, as detailed by Newsmax.

Another $23,000 went to a venue rental at El Choli Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan, the very arena where she was filmed dancing in a suite during a Bad Bunny concert in August. If the optics of swaying with celebrities like LeBron James and Iggy Azalea weren’t questionable enough, this expenditure lands like a punch when tied to her simultaneous speeches on gentrification.

Hotel Bills Stack Up Fast

Breaking down the numbers, the FEC filings show a $680.52 payment to Hotel Palacio Provincial on July 28, followed by heftier sums of $1,507.26 on Aug. 29 and a whopping $9,440.79 on Sept. 29. These aren’t budget stays; they’re the kind of tabs that make you wonder how many community events could have been funded instead.

Then there’s the $3,861.20 dropped at Hotel El Convento on Aug. 25, a property linked to the same ownership as Palacio Provincial. That’s over $15,000 total on lodging alone, a figure that could outfit a small army of local organizers with resources for real change.

Meals weren’t spared the deluxe treatment either, with $10,743.13 spent on catering and dining at San Juan’s priciest spots like Cocina Abierta and Verde Mesa. When you’re billing thousands for food while constituents scrape by, the disconnect starts to sting.

Venue Costs and Concert Vibes

That $23,000 venue rental at El Choli Coliseo, paid between June 24 and Aug. 25, aligns suspiciously with the Bad Bunny concert she attended on Aug. 10. Whether it’s one payment or split deposits, the timing fuels questions about whether campaign funds are doubling as personal entertainment budgets.

Social media clips of her dancing in box seats don’t help clarify the purpose of this expense. If the goal was community outreach, surely a less glitzy setting could have delivered the same message without the celebrity backdrop.

Her campaign manager, Oliver Hidalgo-Wohlleben, defended the spending, stating, “She is deeply proud of her investment in grassroots organizing and will continue to be active in advocating for both people on the island and the millions of Puerto Ricans in the diaspora.” Admirable words, but when the receipts show luxury over locality, it’s hard to see the grass in grassroots.

Spending Beyond the Island

The extravagance wasn’t confined to Puerto Rico; FEC reports reveal thousands more spent stateside during the same quarter. Stays at upscale spots like the Thompson Central Park Hotel in New York City and the Arlo Williamsburg in Brooklyn, plus nearly $5,000 at Hotel Vermont, paint a pattern of premium preferences.

Then there’s the catering, with $4,500 on ice cream from Mr. Ding-a-Ling in Latham, New York, and $4,400 to a D.C.-area executive chef. These aren’t potluck contributions; they’re choices that suggest a taste for the finer things, even on a campaign budget.

Pair this with expenses tied to the “Fighting Oligarchy” tour alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, and the irony thickens. How do you rail against wealth concentration while booking boutique hotels and gourmet spreads with donor dollars?

Questions of Principle Over Flash

Advocacy for Puerto Rico and its diaspora is a worthy cause, no question, and Ocasio-Cortez’s visibility can amplify critical issues. Yet, when nearly $50,000 gets funneled into elite experiences, it muddies the sincerity of that mission for many who are watching from the sidelines.

Campaign funds are meant to build bridges, not book suites, and every dollar spent on luxury is one less for the ground-level work that changes lives. Supporters deserve transparency on whether these choices reflect a strategy for impact or a lapse in judgment.

Ultimately, leadership demands alignment between words and actions, especially when the spotlight is this bright. If the goal is to fight for the underdog, the budget should bark louder than the dance moves at a star-studded concert.
