GOP House chair threatens contempt action against Clintons over Epstein probe

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hold onto your hats, folks -- Republican House Oversight Committee chair James Comer is gearing up to slap contempt of Congress proceedings on Bill and Hillary Clinton for dodging subpoenas tied to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

The crux of this unfolding drama is that the Clintons, subpoenaed months ago to testify about their connections to the Epstein investigation, have yet to comply, prompting Comer to consider serious accountability measures, as Fox News reports.

Let’s rewind to July, when a bipartisan House Oversight Subcommittee greenlit subpoenas for several high-profile figures, including the former president and former secretary of state, as part of a deep dive into Epstein’s nefarious activities.

Subpoenas Issued Amid Epstein Investigation

By early August, those subpoenas were officially served, with the Clintons slated to give depositions on Dec. 17-18.

Fast forward to September, and the committee dropped a bombshell release of tens of thousands of pages of Epstein-related records, with promises of more to come, showing they mean business.

Alongside the Clintons, other big names like James Comey, Loretta Lynch, and Merrick Garland were also called to testify, while the Department of Justice was ordered to hand over all pertinent Epstein documents.

Clintons Accused of Delaying Tactics

But here’s where it gets sticky -- despite the looming deposition dates, the Clintons have apparently been playing a game of hide-and-seek with the committee, refusing to lock in a firm date.

Chairman Comer isn’t mincing words, stating, “It has been more than four months since Bill and Hillary Clinton were subpoenaed to sit for depositions related to our investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s horrific crimes.”

“Throughout that time, the former president and former secretary of state have delayed, obstructed, and largely ignored the committee staff’s efforts to schedule their testimony,” Comer added, and frankly, it’s hard to argue with his frustration when accountability seems to be slipping through the cracks.

Contempt Proceedings Loom for Non-Compliance

A spokesperson from Comer’s office doubled down, saying, “We communicated to the Clintons’ attorney today that they must appear next week or provide a date in early January to appear for their depositions or we will begin contempt of Congress proceedings.”

The same spokesperson noted the stalling tactics, pointing out that the Clintons have been dragging this out for months, and it’s time for the excuses to end -- after all, justice delayed is often justice denied.

Meanwhile, the Clinton Foundation tossed a cryptic jab at Comer, saying, “Ask the chairman for the letter we sent him, and why he won’t respond to it,” which sounds more like a dodge than a defense, if you ask this observer of political theater.

Accountability or Political Posturing?

Now, let’s be fair -- navigating legal and political firestorms is no picnic, and the Clintons have faced their share of scrutiny over the years, but ignoring a congressional subpoena isn’t exactly a shining example of cooperation.

Comer has made it clear that if the Clintons don’t show up next week or commit to an early January date, contempt proceedings are on the table, a move that could escalate this saga into a full-blown showdown.

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about one couple -- it’s about ensuring that no one, no matter how powerful, can sidestep the rule of law, especially when it comes to uncovering the truth behind Epstein’s dark legacy.
