Nick Reiner charged with parents' murders as schizophrenia diagnosis emerges

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Tragedy has struck Brentwood with a chilling double homicide that raises tough questions about mental health and personal responsibility.

Nick Reiner, 32, is reportedly contending with a recent schizophrenia diagnosis and now stands accused of brutally stabbing his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, to death in their home on Sunday, a case complicated by his long history of mental illness, substance abuse, and violent tendencies, as PageSix reports.

The Hollywood legend's son is now said to be struggling with schizophrenia. It's a chronic brain disorder marked by delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking, according to the American Psychiatric Association -- were well-documented before this horrific event. His behavior had turned “alarming” in recent weeks, sources say, as he lived in his parents’ guesthouse in an upscale Brentwood neighborhood.

Escalating Tensions Before the Tragedy

About a month prior, doctors altered Nick’s medications, leaving him “out of his head,” per insider accounts. Efforts to stabilize him were underway, but the adjustments came too late.

Nick’s history paints a grim picture: multiple stints in rehab -- nearly 20, by some counts -- bouts of homelessness, and a worsening of his schizophrenia due to substance abuse. He had even recently been treated at a high-end Los Angeles rehab facility for dual diagnoses.

The night before the murders, Nick attended a Christmas party at Conan O’Brien’s house with his parents, who were reportedly uneasy about leaving him alone due to his escalating behavior. At the event, Nick acted bizarrely, unsettling guests and sparking an argument with Rob and Michele.

Violence Erupts in Brentwood Home

On Sunday afternoon, the worst unfolded when Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead in their home by their daughter, Romy. The L.A. County Medical Examiner confirmed they succumbed to “multiple sharp force injuries,” with sources alleging their throats were slit.

Nick was arrested that night near Exposition Park in downtown L.A. after reportedly leaving bloody evidence at a Santa Monica hotel. He was initially booked at Parker Center Jail before a transfer to Twin Towers Correctional Facility, where he remains without bail.

Charged on Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder and a special circumstance of multiple murders, Nick faces life without parole or the death penalty. His arraignment is set for Jan. 7.

Court Appearance Reveals Troubled State

During his first court appearance on Wednesday, Nick cut a somber, disheveled figure, shackled and clad in an anti-suicide smock. He confirmed waiving a speedy arraignment, muttering, “Yes, your honor.”.

His lawyer, Alan Jackson, called the case “very, very complex and serious,” urging the public to avoid snap judgments outside the courthouse.

Nick’s relationship with his family was reportedly always volatile, with hostility often aimed at his parents. An insider told PageSix that Nick “really resented his dad” and loathed his own lack of success compared to the acclaimed actor-director. Such envy, while tragic, doesn’t excuse violence, though it paints a picture of deep-seated pain in a culture often too quick to gloss over personal responsibility with therapy-speak.

Mental Health Plea Looms Large

Nick is expected to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, a defense that will likely spotlight his schizophrenia diagnosis and erratic behavior post-medication change.

Rob and Michele’s reluctance to leave Nick alone, even as they feared his actions, speaks to a heartbreaking dilemma many families face. Friends at the Christmas party recalled Rob admitting he was “petrified” Nick might one day “hurt” him -- a chilling prophecy now fulfilled.

As this tragic case unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder that balancing mental health support with accountability remains a critical challenge for families and society alike.
