Zohran Mamdani faces backlash over Hanukkah video with Mandy Patinkin

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hanukkah should be a time of unity, but for New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, it’s become a lightning rod for criticism.

Mamdani’s recent social media video, featuring actor Mandy Patinkin and his family lighting candles for the holiday, has ignited a firestorm of backlash, with many calling it a hollow gesture given his anti-Israel record, Breitbart News reported.

The clip, racking up over a million views on X by Sunday, shows Mamdani joining in festive traditions, yet detractors argue it’s a calculated move to soften his image. They point to his history of rhetoric seen as hostile to Jewish sovereignty, which clashes with the very meaning of Hanukkah.

Historical Irony in Holiday Celebration

Commentators have been quick to highlight the disconnect between Hanukkah’s roots and Mamdani’s public stances. Joel M. Petlin noted, “Chanukah marks the re-dedication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem after winning a war against Syrian Greek occupiers to restore Jewish sovereignty over Israel,” a truth seemingly lost on the mayor-elect and his celebrity guests.

That celebration of Jewish independence stands as a sharp rebuke to Mamdani’s track record, including his refusal to denounce the chant “globalize the intifada,” a call tied to violent uprisings against Israel. Critics see this video as less about joy and more about political optics.

Author Avi Benlolo didn’t hold back, stating, “The very essence of Chanukah is resistance against people who reject Jewish presence in the Land of Israel.” His words cut to the heart of why so many find Mamdani’s participation in the holiday deeply insincere.

Accusations of a Staged Performance

The setting of the video, appearing as a curated home environment with Patinkin’s family, has fueled claims of a staged act. Social media users vented frustration, with one declaring, “We’re not fooled, Zohran! You were raised by an actress, and you posed with an actor, and you both delivered a script.”

That sentiment echoes a broader distrust, as many believe Mamdani wouldn’t step into an ordinary Jewish family’s home for such a moment. Instead, they see this as a polished attempt to dodge accountability for past statements, like calling Israel’s actions in Gaza a “genocide.”

Political columnist Moshe Hill added fuel to the fire, pointing out, “Chanukah is about Jewish sovereignty over the Jewish homeland, something that both Zohran Mamdani and Mandy Patinkin actively fight against.” His critique underscores how the holiday’s symbolism undermines the very narrative Mamdani might hope to spin.

Broader Concerns Over Mamdani’s Agenda

Beyond the video, Mamdani’s broader record keeps drawing scrutiny, from his comments on a protest at a Manhattan synagogue to his alignment with radical causes. His suggestion that the synagogue might be violating international law raised eyebrows and intensified fears about his leadership direction.

Rep. Elise Stefanik has labeled him a “raging antisemite” and “communist,” while Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of a Hamas co-founder, warned of Mamdani as a “trojan horse” for a dangerous ideological alliance. Such strong words reflect deep unease about what his tenure as mayor could mean for New York City’s diverse communities.

Even within his own ranks, trouble brews, as seen with the recent resignation of senior appointee Catherine Almonte Da Costa over resurfaced posts mocking Jews and attacking law enforcement. This incident only adds to the perception of a troubling pattern in Mamdani’s circle.

A Missed Opportunity for Genuine Dialogue

Hanukkah could have been a chance for Mamdani to bridge divides and address the concerns of Jewish New Yorkers head-on. Instead, this video has deepened skepticism, with many feeling it’s a shallow gesture rather than a step toward understanding.

Critics like Jason Curtis Anderson predict Mamdani will continue amplifying fringe voices to reshape narratives around Israel and Jewish issues over the next four years. If true, such a strategy risks alienating a significant portion of the city he’s set to lead.

The mayor-elect’s path forward demands more than holiday photo ops with well-known actors like Patinkin, whose own views on global conflicts have drawn ire. New Yorkers deserve authentic engagement, not scripts, if trust is ever to be rebuilt amid these turbulent times.
