NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani taps controversial team members to lead new administration

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, is building a team that’s raising eyebrows across the city with a blend of seasoned bureaucrats and fiery activists, as the New York Post reports.

As Mamdani begins to shape his administration, his appointments so far mix government veterans with left-wing ideologues, though many top roles remain unfilled, leaving observers guessing about the full scope of his progressive vision.

Starting with a familiar face, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has agreed to stay on, a move that’s calmed some nerves about a socialist mayor overseeing law enforcement. Her track record of slashing crime and cleaning house of dubious promotions under the previous administration is a rare point of relief.

Key Appointments Spark Debate Early On

Next up, Kamar Samuels steps in as schools chancellor, tasked with steering the nation’s largest public school system. A former Upper West Side superintendent, Samuels has pushed to scrap Gifted & Talented programs in the name of racial diversity—a priority shared with Mamdani but a red flag for parents valuing merit-based education.

Lillian Bonsignore, a decorated FDNY veteran, becomes the second woman to lead the department as commissioner, though some firefighters have grumbled about her appointment. Her experience as chief of EMS operations is undeniable.

For transportation, Mike Flynn takes the wheel as commissioner, bringing a decade of experience from the Department of Transportation and later a consulting gig. With Mamdani’s goal of free buses, Flynn’s role will test whether idealism can meet practical gridlock in a city notorious for traffic woes.

Progressive Ideologues Join the Ranks

Dean Fuleihan, a pragmatic veteran of city and state government, assumes the role of first deputy mayor, having managed hefty budgets under former Mayor Bill de Blasio. His steady hand might balance the more radical picks.

Elle Bisgaard-Church, a Democratic Socialists of America member and Mamdani’s former chief of staff in the state Assembly, now holds that role in City Hall. Her early appointment signals Mamdani’s comfort with ideological allies in key positions.

Julie Su, a polarizing figure from President Joe Biden’s Cabinet, joins as deputy mayor for economic justice. Her failed confirmation as labor secretary over progressive stances and past oversight of fraud issues in California.

Controversial Past Actions Under Scrutiny

Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer who defended an al-Qaeda member and advised under Biden, steps into the chief counsel role, advising Mamdani directly. His background includes ties to anti-Israel activism at Columbia University.

Cea Weaver, a left-wing activist known for pushing rent freezes and eviction bans during the COVID-19 crisis, will lead the revived Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants. Her history of tenant strikes might thrill progressives.

Tascha Van Auken, another Democratic Socialists of America organizer, heads the new Office of Mass Engagement to rally community and faith groups.

Mixed Bag of Retentions and Resignations

Several holdovers from the prior administration, like emergency management commissioner Zach Iscol and sanitation head Javier Lojan, stay on temporarily through the winter storm season. Chief Business Diversity Officer Michael Garner also remains, suggesting Mamdani isn’t entirely torching the old guard—yet.

Catherine Almonte Da Costa, an early appointee for making appointments, resigned after just one day when past antisemitic online posts surfaced.

With other picks like Steven Banks as corporation counsel and Louise Yeung as chief climate officer, Mamdani’s administration is shaping up as a battleground of experience versus ideology. While the mayor’s supporters may cheer this progressive push, many New Yorkers are left wondering if practicality will survive in a city that demands results over rhetoric.
