Trump defends federal agents in Minneapolis after deadly shooting

Reading Time: 2 minutes

MINNEAPOLIS — A deadly confrontation on Saturday morning between U.S. Border Patrol agents and a Minneapolis resident has thrust the city back into the national spotlight amid ongoing disputes over federal law enforcement presence.

President Trump has defended the federal agents involved in the south Minneapolis shooting around 9 a.m., where a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and licensed gun owner was killed during a struggle, while Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have renewed demands for federal forces to leave the city as tensions escalate over Trump’s immigration crackdown, Operation Metro Surge.

The incident has ignited fierce debate over the role of federal authority in local communities and the deepening divide between state and national priorities in Minnesota.

Saturday Shooting Heightens Local Tensions

This latest shooting, the third in Minnesota this month according to Fox News, occurred just a block from where Renee Good, 37, was fatally shot by an ICE officer earlier this month.

According to a DHS official, agents were conducting a targeted operation against an individual described as an unauthorized migrant wanted for violent assault when the encounter turned deadly.

The man, armed with a semi-automatic handgun and two magazines, was shot multiple times in the chest during what the official called an “armed struggle,” though accounts differ on whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital.

Trump’s Unwavering Support for Agents

President Trump quickly took to Truth Social to stand by the federal agents, linking their presence in Minnesota to what he describes as a massive fraud investigation.

“We are there because of massive Monetary Fraud, with Billions of Dollars missing, and Illegal Criminals that were allowed to infiltrate the State through the Democrats’ Open Border Policy,” Trump declared, painting the operation as a critical response to systemic failures.

His claim of a “cover up” for theft and fraud suggests local leaders might be dodging accountability for financial misconduct, a narrative that’s sure to keep the pot boiling in the Twin Cities.

Local Leaders Demand Federal Withdrawal

Gov. Walz and Mayor Frey have pushed back hard, with Frey condemning the “heavily armed, masked agents” patrolling Minneapolis and urging Trump to show true leadership.

“This is not how it has to be,” Frey stated at a press conference, a sentiment that captures the frustration of many locals tired of living under what feels like a federal siege.

Walz, meanwhile, criticized federal officials for jumping to conclusions within minutes of the incident, insisting on the need for a fair and thorough investigation rather than a rushed narrative.

Conflicting Accounts Fuel Uncertainty

Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino defended the agents, accusing local leaders like Frey and Chief Brian O’Hara of omitting key details, such as the suspect’s possession of a loaded weapon and extra ammunition.

Yet, with Chief O’Hara and Walz arguing that federal statements unfairly tarnished the victim’s reputation before all facts were clear, the dueling accounts only deepen public mistrust.

Amid weeks of protests over Operation Metro Surge, this latest tragedy begs the question: can Minnesota’s leaders and federal authorities bridge this chasm, or will their standoff leave communities caught in the crossfire?
