Lil Jon's son Nathan Smith found dead in Georgia pond after days-long search

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Nathan Smith, the 27-year-old son of rapper and producer Lil Jon, was found dead in a pond at Mayfield Park in Milton, Georgia, on Friday. Cherokee County Fire Department divers located and recovered the body just before noon. The Milton Police Department announced the recovery shortly after.

Nathan had been missing since early Tuesday morning, when he ran out of his home on Baldwin Drive without a cellphone. His loved ones immediately raised alarms, and officers indicated he may have been disoriented and in need of assistance. Days of searching followed — and ended at the bottom of a pond near his residence.

His father, Jonathan Smith — known professionally as Lil Jon — confirmed his son's death to Page Six on Friday.

A Family Shattered

Lil Jon, 55, released a statement expressing devastation over Nathan's death. He described his son's character and talents and thanked those involved in the search effort. Nathan's mother, Nicole Smith, was also named in the statement.

Nathan was no stranger to the music world his father built. He was a music producer, artist, and engineer — an NYU graduate who performed under the stage name "DJ Young Slade." He wasn't coasting on a famous last name. He was building something of his own.

In a May 2014 interview with HuffPost, Jonathan Smith spoke warmly about his son's character and the open communication between them. That interview now reads like a time capsule — a father proud of the young man his boy was becoming.

Unanswered Questions in Milton

PageSix reports that the Milton Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division stated the investigation remains open and active. Officers noted no indication of foul play, but that characterization comes with the caveat that answers are still being sought.

The circumstances surrounding Nathan's departure from his home early Tuesday were described by police as unusual. He left without a cellphone. A local outlet, Rough Draft Atlanta, reported he was possibly naked when he left — though that detail remains unconfirmed. What is confirmed: a young man left his house under strange circumstances and never came back.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office was expected to formally confirm the identification of the body. At the time of the announcement, authorities believed the remains to be Nathan's, and Lil Jon's own confirmation to the press left little doubt. No cause of death has been released. No explanation has been offered for why Nathan ran from his home. No one has publicly clarified what "disoriented" meant in practical terms — whether it was a medical episode, a mental health crisis, or something else entirely. These are not small gaps. They are the entire middle of the story, still waiting to be filled.

The Weight of Public Grief

There is a particular cruelty to losing a child in public. Lil Jon is a figure who has spent decades in the spotlight — from crunk anthems to reality television to Las Vegas residencies. But none of that insulates a father from the phone call that changes everything.

Nathan Smith was 27. He had a degree, a craft, a stage name, and a future that was actively unfolding. Whatever happened in the early hours of that Tuesday morning — whatever sent him out of his house and into the dark — it ended with divers pulling his body from a pond steps from where he lived.

Jonathan Smith also has a 1-year-old daughter, Nahara, with his girlfriend Jamila Sozahdah. The juxtaposition is brutal and needs no embellishment — a man mourning one child while raising another.

When the Search Ends

Missing persons cases carry a specific kind of dread. The days between Tuesday and Friday — between "he's gone" and "we found him" — are the worst kind of limbo. Every hour without answers compounds the fear. When the answer finally arrives and it's the worst one, the grief doesn't begin fresh. It simply changes shape. The family had been bracing for this since Tuesday. That doesn't make Friday easier.

Milton police, Cherokee County divers, and investigators all played roles in bringing this search to its conclusion. Lil Jon thanked them in his statement. That kind of grace, offered in the middle of the worst moment of a man's life, says more than any press release.

The investigation remains open. The medical examiner's office has work to do. The public knows the outcome but not the cause — and the Smith family may not yet know either. Nathan Smith deserved better than a Friday afternoon recovery. His family deserved better than four days of waiting. And whatever answers the investigation eventually produces, they won't undo what happened on a quiet stretch of Baldwin Drive in the early hours of a Tuesday morning.
