Scalise torches NYC Mayor Mamdani as 18 freeze to death under socialist leadership

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Eighteen people are dead in New York City. They died on the streets of the richest city in America during a brutal cold snap — while the city's new mayor, a self-described democratic socialist, offered warming vehicles and condolences. On Tuesday, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., made sure the country noticed.

Scalise tore into Mayor Zohran Mamdani, connecting the mounting death toll to the broader consequences of left-wing governance and warning that Democrats' obstruction of homeland security funding threatens to compound the crisis.

"In the middle of a storm in New York City alone — you want to see what socialism gets you — people now have frozen to death under the leadership of the socialist Mamdani. That's what Democrat leadership gets you."

The No. 2 Republican in the House didn't mince words. He didn't need to. The facts are doing the work.

The Body Count Speaks

Mamdani confirmed on Monday that an 18th New Yorker had died during dangerously low temperatures. He didn't hold a press conference to announce it. He mentioned the death during a press conference about a separate issue — a detail that tells you everything about where this falls on City Hall's priority list.

"Since Friday's press conference, one additional New Yorker lost their life on the streets of our city as a result of this cold snap. The total lives lost is now 18. Each life lost is a tragedy, and we will continue to hold their families in our thoughts."

Thoughts. Eighteen dead, and the mayor's office is offering thoughts.

The Mamdani administration deployed warming vehicles throughout the city and urged homeless residents to shield themselves from below-freezing temperatures at a shelter. Republicans have accused Mamdani of not doing enough to expand access to emergency services. Fox News reached out to the mayor's office for a response to Scalise's criticism.

No response came.

That silence is a choice. This is a mayor who has never been shy about grandstanding — who confronted federal officials on camera, who built his brand on moral urgency. But when the No. 2 House Republican calls him out over 18 dead New Yorkers, his office goes quiet. It's a revealing asymmetry: plenty of energy for ideological combat, not much for accountability.

Democrats Play Politics While DHS Runs Dry

Scalise didn't stop at Mamdani. He used the moment to expose a larger Democratic gambit — one that could strip federal disaster resources just as Americans need them most.

Democrats rejected what has been described as a bipartisan compromise on funding the Department of Homeland Security. The funding could lapse by the end of this week. Scalise laid out what that means in plain terms:

"What is not funded if the Democrats get their way? They will literally shut down funding for disaster relief and FEMA."

Though it's unclear what role FEMA currently plays in aiding New Yorkers during the crisis, the broader point stands on its own. Democrats are willing to let federal disaster infrastructure go dark at a moment when Americans are freezing to death on city streets. Whether FEMA is directly involved in this particular crisis matters less than the principle: you don't defund the fire department during fire season to win a political argument.

Scalise also warned that a DHS funding lapse would hammer air travel, forcing TSA employees to work without pay and throwing major airports into chaos:

"They want to shut down the TSA. So just take Atlanta's airport, LaGuardia [in New York City]. Those two airports alone having been shut down, if the Democrats get their way, will wreak havoc with tens of millions of Americans who just want to go see their family members, want to travel for a wedding, or whatever the case may be."

Disaster relief gutted. Airport security in limbo. All because Democrats refuse to accept a bipartisan deal on homeland security funding. The question isn't whether they have leverage. It's what they're willing to break to use it.

The Real Game: Open Borders at Any Cost

Strip away the procedural noise, and the DHS fight is about one thing: immigration enforcement. ICE got an injection of billions of dollars from President Trump's "big, beautiful bill" last year. The agency is funded. The border is being enforced. Democrats know all of this.

They're not fighting a budget battle. They're fighting the enforcement itself.

Scalise said as much:

"Maybe they're trying to start a small business and want to go to another city to try to create some jobs. They won't be able to do that because Democrats want to have a tantrum, not to defund ICE, because again, ICE is fully funded, but just because they want to cause chaos in America to get open borders."

This is the part that deserves the most attention. Democrats aren't objecting to a funding shortfall — there is no shortfall. They're objecting to the law being carried out. And to register that objection, they're willing to let FEMA go dark, TSA agents go unpaid, and disaster relief wither at a time when people are dying from exposure in the nation's largest city.

That's not a negotiating position. That's hostage-taking with federal services as collateral.

Socialism Meets Winter

There's a pattern in progressive cities that plays out with grim regularity: grand ideological ambitions layered on top of crumbling basic services. New York under Mamdani is the latest and most dramatic example.

This is a mayor who ran as a democratic socialist, who was inaugurated with the progressive movement's full blessing, who promised to transform the city's relationship with government. His platform was built on sweeping systemic change — the kind that sounds electrifying at a rally and irrelevant to a man freezing on a sidewalk in the Bronx.

Weeks into the job, 18 of his residents are dead from the cold. His administration's response: warming vehicles deployed, shelters promoted, and a solemn message tucked into a press conference about something else. No emergency declaration dominating the headlines. No visible shift in posture. Just the bureaucratic hum of a city government doing the minimum while the body count climbs by ones.

The left always has a theory of transformation. It rarely has a plan for the week.
