President Trump announced Saturday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will deploy to U.S. airports starting Monday to help move security lines that have ballooned as tens of thousands of TSA officers work without pay.
The move comes as congressional Democrats refuse to fund the Department of Homeland Security, turning a routine budget fight into a crisis that travelers can feel every time they step into an airport terminal.
Trump put it plainly on social media Sunday morning: "ICE will do the job far better than ever before!" The deployment is a direct response to a staffing collapse at TSA. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis laid the blame squarely where it belongs:
"This pointless, reckless shutdown of our homeland security workforce has caused more than 400 TSA officers to quit and thousands to call out from work because they are not able to afford gas, childcare, food, or rent."
As reported by Newsmax, some 10% of TSA employees have been absent in recent days. Major airports in Atlanta, New York City, and Houston have seen the worst of it. Spring break travelers, families with kids, people trying to get home for the holidays: they're all paying the price for a funding standoff they didn't ask for.
Border czar Tom Homan and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy hit the Sunday shows to make the case for the deployment. Homan told reporters a plan would be finalized by end of day Sunday "to move those lines along."
"When we deploy tomorrow, we'll have a well thought-out plan to execute."
Duffy was more specific about what ICE agents would actually do. He said ICE agents "know how to pat people down, they know how to run the X-ray machines." These are federal law enforcement officers trained in security procedures. The idea that they can't assist with airport screening requires a willful ignorance of what immigration agents do every day at ports of entry across the country.
Details remain thin on exactly how the integration will work, and Homan acknowledged that ICE agents may not operate certain specialized screening equipment due to a lack of specific experience. That's a reasonable concession that signals thoughtfulness, not improvisation.

Here's what makes this particularly galling. ICE agents have continued to receive pay through a separate funding provision. TSA officers have not. Democrats could fund TSA tomorrow. They've chosen not to, because they want to use the leverage to impose new restrictions on ICE's immigration enforcement operations.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told CNN his caucus is open to a separate funding agreement for TSA employees, but only while lawmakers debate measures to "get ICE under control." Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was more direct about the strategy on NBC's "Meet the Press":
"We have an obligation to not fund an agency that is acting this lawlessly."
Read that again. A sitting U.S. senator believes the correct response to a funding dispute is to let airport security deteriorate nationwide. TSA workers miss rent payments. Families wait three hours to get through security with toddlers. And the Democratic position is that this suffering is justified because they object to how immigration law is being enforced.
The strategy is transparent. Democrats aren't holding DHS funding hostage because they care about TSA workers. If they did, they'd pass a clean funding bill for TSA tomorrow. They're holding it hostage because they want to kneecap immigration enforcement, and they've decided that stranded travelers and unpaid screeners make useful political props.
The union representing TSA workers, the American Federation of Government Employees, criticized the ICE deployment rather than the Democrats who created the conditions requiring it. Union president Everett Kelley said:
"Our members at TSA have been showing up every day, without a paycheck, because they believe in the mission of keeping the flying public safe."
That's admirable. Those workers deserve real praise. But Kelley followed it by calling ICE agents "untrained, armed agents who have shown how dangerous they can be." Federal law enforcement officers, trained by the same government, operating under the same DHS umbrella, dismissed as dangerous and incompetent. The union chose to aim at the administration rather than the lawmakers who won't sign the checks.
Democrats have latched onto a shooting earlier this year in Minneapolis, where masked ICE agents fatally shot two U.S. citizens, as justification for demanding new rules and procedures before any DHS funding moves forward. That incident deserves scrutiny and accountability through proper channels. What it does not justify is:
This is a pattern. Find an emotionally charged incident, expand it into a systemic indictment, then use it as a battering ram against any enforcement mechanism you dislike. The Minneapolis shooting becomes the reason TSA agents in Atlanta can't pay their mortgages. The logical chain doesn't hold, but it doesn't have to. It just has to sound compassionate on cable news.
Trump saw an operational problem and deployed available federal resources to address it. Democrats saw the same problem and calculated how to use it. The ICE agents will be at airports Monday morning. The question is how long Democrats will let TSA workers go without a paycheck before they stop pretending this was ever about accountability.
