The White House is again shutting CNN out of the presidential travel pool for Trump’s Texas and Oklahoma trip, after a judge limited restored access to White House grounds only.
A source told The Hill on Thursday that the White House plans to keep CNN from providing pool coverage during President Donald Trump’s travel to Texas and Oklahoma, Breitbart reported. CNN was not listed as the television pool outlet for the trip.
The move continues a hard line on travel access. The White House already dropped CNN from Air Force One for last Saturday’s Tennessee-Texas college football matchup, and a federal judge’s order restoring credentials covered White House grounds only, not travel with the president.
CNN, MS NOW, and Politico are pressing the courts to force broader access. Their attorneys renewed a filing on Tuesday. The Trump administration’s response is due Friday, October 2.
The distinction matters. After the judge’s order, CNN senior reporter Betsy Klein was allowed back onto White House grounds in Washington on September 24, 2026. Pool duty on the road is a separate category, and the White House is treating it that way.
That same approach showed up when the White House locked CNN out of Air Force One for the Knoxville football trip. CNN was left off the plane for the Tennessee-Texas game last Saturday.
CNN spokesperson Emily Kuhn confirmed the latest removal to NBC News but offered no further comment. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Texas and Oklahoma plans.
In court papers, the three outlets allege the administration has “persisted in unpredictably and inconsistently implementing its ban.” CNN’s attorneys used similar language, “unpredictably and inconsistently”, in the renewed filing seeking reinstated pool coverage.
CNN had earlier called the removal “a blatant violation of the First Amendment and due process.” The outlets also claim irreparable harm from lost credentials and access.
The travel snubs sit inside a wider White House decision. In mid-September, President Trump announced he was banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House effective immediately over what he called constant fake news coverage.
The New York Post reported Trump’s own words on the scope he wanted.
"I don’t want them in my office. I don’t want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can, and if they could straighten themselves out, I’d love it."
Trump also said the ban was because “they are fake news, they cannot tell the truth,” and added that he does not have to let them into “the people’s house.”
On Truth Social, Trump put the decision in plain terms, as Fox News reported.
"I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW... and Politico... from the White House as a result of their constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS!"
“You get sick of it,” Trump said of the cumulative coverage from the three outlets. A senior White House official confirmed the ban to journalists and said it would take effect that Saturday, even as CNN was still slotted for United Nations pool coverage at the time.
Past efforts to limit outlet or reporter access have run into federal judges. Trump has acknowledged outcomes can depend on the judge. The current order restored grounds access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico but left presidential travel outside that remedy.
CNN, MS NOW, and Politico are seeking court intervention to block the stripping of White House credentials and to reinstate full access. Their renewed filing this week keeps the pressure on ahead of the October 2 administration response deadline.
The White House has already shown it will separate grounds entry from travel privileges. That is the same pattern seen when the administration barred CNN from Air Force One for the Tennessee football trip.
Even after the broader ban announcement, access questions kept shifting. Melania Trump’s office approved CNN credentials in one channel while the White House held the line on press privileges elsewhere. The network fight has produced its own industry fallout, including reports that Fox News joined rival networks in suspending some White House coverage after the ban.
None of that changes the operational fact for Texas and Oklahoma. CNN is not on the television pool list for those stops. The judge’s order does not force travel access. The administration still has until Friday to answer the latest filing.
Presidential travel pools are a working press arrangement, not a constitutional blank check to board Air Force One on demand. The White House is using the space the court left open: grounds access restored, road coverage withheld.
CNN and its partners can keep filing. They can keep calling the policy a First Amendment crisis. What they have not done is reverse the practical result. The network missed the Tennessee-Texas flight. It is set to miss the Texas and Oklahoma pool duty next.
Trump said he would welcome the outlets if they straightened themselves out. Until then, the White House is deciding who rides along when the president leaves Washington, and CNN is not on the manifest.
Voters elected an administration that would stop treating hostile coverage as an entitlement. Travel pool slots are one place that choice shows up in real time.
