Rubio says Ukraine hit ships carrying American oil and presses Zelensky to end the war

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Ukraine of striking Black Sea ships carrying American-owned oil and pressed President Zelensky to end the war as U.S. firms complained.

Rubio told interviewers that American companies had called Washington after energy vessels were hit, saying their oil was aboard. He said he does not believe Kyiv deliberately targeted those cargoes, yet the strikes still landed and added risk to a world already facing an energy crunch.

The secretary made clear the United States wants the fighting stopped. In comments released Sunday and again Monday to reporters in Uzbekistan, he said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should focus on ending the conflict rather than airing fresh grievances about U.S. support.

That message lands as President Trump works to keep Russia at the negotiating table and shield American drivers from diesel spikes. Rubio’s stance fits an America First foreign policy that puts U.S. interests and a negotiated close ahead of open-ended escalation.

American oil on ships that got hit

Rubio described the Black Sea incidents in plain terms. U.S. firms complained after strikes damaged vessels carrying their product.

"We have seen strikes on energy vessels in the Black Sea. And there’s been complaints, a lot, because we have American companies calling us and saying, ‘Hey, that was our oil on that ship that was hit by Ukraine,'"

He added that intent may not have been the point. The hits still happened.

"Now, I don’t believe Ukraine intentionally targeted them, but those ships got hit. And we already have a world that is facing an energy crisis,"

Rubio said Washington has asked Kyiv to avoid moves that make the energy picture worse. Frustration followed when those requests did not stop the pattern. The New York Post detailed his warning that no one needs fresh shocks to already tight markets.

Trump has made the same diesel concern explicit. On Oct. 9 he announced the United States would import hundreds of thousands of gallons of diesel fuel to ease prices at the pump. The same day he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump keeps Russia talking and Iran isolated

On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social that he is negotiating peace and will not take steps that foolishly push Moscow away from the table. He said great progress is being made.

"Perhaps more importantly, Russia is doing very little, if anything, to help the Islamic Republic of Iran, compared to what they could be doing, and I want to keep it that way,"

Trump also charged that Zelensky is hitting diesel refineries inside Russia and knows those attacks are hurting world diesel markets, including those in the United States. The post framed energy pressure on American consumers as a direct cost of prolonged fighting.

Rubio’s State Department has already shown it will act when foreign actors overstay or obstruct U.S. priorities, including when it expelled Iranian U.N. diplomats who remained past their welcome. Keeping Russia from deepening ties with Tehran fits the same hard-edged approach.

On Friday, Trump halted plans to roll out sanctions on Moscow under a bipartisan bill named for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. The pause matches the public line that needless pressure now could wreck talks already underway.

Zelensky’s intel claim meets a flat denial

Zelensky used a Sunday appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” to argue that only the United States can give Ukraine timely warning when Russia fires ballistic missiles. He said that help did not arrive.

"We have dozens of countries who help. But only [the] United States has this unique intelligence to tell our side when Russia uses ballistic missiles. And we didn’t get it."

Over the weekend he stressed that U.S. intelligence on Russian attacks is not replaceable. Rubio rejected the charge outright while speaking to reporters in Uzbekistan on Monday.

"There’s been no pause. Zelensky should be focused on bringing an end to this war."

He said he does not know where Zelensky is getting these claims or why he is taking them to the press. The Trump administration’s position remains that intelligence sharing meant to warn Kyiv of incoming ballistic missiles has not stopped.

Last week Ukraine also claimed that access to Starshield had been throttled for systems moving faster than 100 miles per hour, leaving air defenses slower to answer Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Russia. Elon Musk and the Trump administration both denied responsibility. Who ordered any slowdown remains unclear.

Donetsk stalemate and a war no one is winning

Rubio sketched the battlefield in blunt terms. He said the war is honestly about one part of Ukraine called Donetsk. Russians already hold all but about 11 percent of that region.

Ukrainian forces sit on a defensive line they and military strategists call the last one that can hold. Give it up, Rubio said, and nothing remains to defend Kyiv. Russia has not broken through.

"no one’s winning that war."

He added that the United States remains willing, able, and prepared to mediate if a negotiated settlement becomes possible. That, he said, is how the war will ultimately end. The invasion’s fifth anniversary arrives in February of next year if the guns stay hot.

Wall Street Journal reporting on Monday noted that during the Oct. 9 call, Putin floated a sit-down with Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to close the conflict. Trump’s public posts treat continued talks, not new sanctions or deeper entanglement, as the path that protects American energy markets and limits Russian help to Iran. Rubio has taken a similarly firm line in other diplomatic fights, including when he ordered Iranian U.N. diplomats out after talks went nowhere.

American companies want their cargoes left alone. U.S. drivers want diesel prices that do not spike because refineries become targets. Taxpayers want an endgame, not another year of stalemate. Rubio’s State Department has also moved to remove migrants whose home countries refused to take them back, showing the same insistence on results over process.

The secretary’s message to Kyiv was consistent across the Breitbart interview and the Uzbekistan gaggle: stop actions that hit American commercial interests, quit the public blame game over intelligence, and put energy into ending the war. Trump’s Truth Social posts and the sanctions pause point the same direction. Early straw polls already show Rubio dominating the 2028 GOP field, and his handling of this file tracks the practical conservatism voters reward.

Peace that protects American oil, diesel markets, and leverage over Iran is the only outcome that serves the people who pay the bills. Endless war does not.
