Afghan refugee charged in DC National Guard attack may face death penalty

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Accused shooter Rahmanullah Lakanwal now stares down the death penalty for a chilling attack on American troops in the nation’s capital.

Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan refugee, was slapped with federal first-degree murder charges on Tuesday for the November 26 shooting of West Virginia National Guard soldiers Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe, the New York Post reported.

The tragedy claimed Beckstrom’s life at just 20 years old, while Wolfe, 24, clings to a remarkable recovery. Federal prosecutors have escalated the case to the DC US District Court, signaling a hard push for the ultimate punishment.

Federal Charges Reveal Calculated Intent

Details from the criminal complaint paint a grim picture of premeditation. Lakanwal allegedly acquired a stolen .357 Magnum revolver weeks before the attack and sought even more firepower, including an AR-15 and a stockless AK-47-style pistol.

On October 15, he contacted someone to “find” these additional weapons, though he only secured the revolver. By November 15, CCTV footage captured him purchasing .357 Magnum rounds from a sporting goods store in Bellingham, Washington.

The FBI affidavit claims he drove across the country from his home in Bellingham to Washington, DC, arriving just days before the ambush. Video evidence shows him firing directly at Beckstrom and Wolfe, both collapsing under gunfire two blocks from the White House.

Questionable Claims and Tragic Loss

Lakanwal told an associate he needed a gun “for protection in his vehicle as a Lyft and Uber driver,” but his remark about the revolver—“only five rounds?”—raises serious doubts. That flippant comment suggests a far darker purpose than self-defense, especially given the brutality of the attack.

Sarah Beckstrom was shot in the head and died on Thanksgiving Day, leaving her family to grieve through the holidays. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro noted, “Sarah Beckstrom was just 20 years old when she was killed and her parents are now forced to endure the holiday season without their daughter.”

Pirro’s words cut deep, and it’s hard to argue with the raw pain behind them. Yet, when a young soldier’s life is snuffed out in such a calculated way, justice demands a response that matches the crime.

Background Raises National Security Concerns

Lakanwal, evacuated to the US under Operation Allies Welcome after the chaotic 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal, had served in a CIA-backed paramilitary force against the Taliban. Trump administration officials, however, assert he wasn’t properly vetted before entering the country.

National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent testified to Congress that of roughly 88,000 evacuees, at least 2,000 have ties to terror groups. His statement to the House Homeland Security Committee—“These individuals, despite what has been reported, were not vetted properly to come into the United States”—should make every American pause.

Sloppy vetting processes under the previous administration have real consequences, as Beckstrom’s family now knows all too well. When policy failures open the door to violence on our soil, accountability must extend beyond the shooter to those who set the stage.

Path Forward in Pursuit of Justice

Lakanwal faces additional federal firearms charges for transporting a stolen weapon across state lines and possessing a firearm during a violent crime. He pleaded not guilty to earlier local charges of murder and assault in the DC Superior Court this month.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has signaled that prosecutors will pursue the death penalty, and these new charges underscore that resolve. With his next court appearance set for January 2, the legal battle ahead will test whether the system can deliver a fitting outcome.

This case isn’t just about one man’s actions; it’s a glaring reminder of the risks tied to hasty resettlement programs. As Wolfe fights to rebuild his life and Beckstrom’s loved ones mourn, Americans deserve answers and a commitment to prevent such heartbreak from happening again.
