Corey Lewandowski is out at the Department of Homeland Security. A DHS spokesperson confirmed his departure on Saturday, telling NBC News simply:
"Mr. Lewandowski no longer has a role at DHS."
The exit follows President Trump's decision to fire former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem earlier this month after she served for a year in the agency's top role. Former Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma was sworn in as her replacement earlier this week.
Lewandowski had been serving as a special government employee and top adviser to Noem. His departure comes amid mounting questions about his role overseeing contracts at the department, and multiple sources told NBC News that Trump himself had begun asking those around him what Lewandowski's role was in assigning contracts at DHS, including whether he had personally profited.
NBC News reported that Lewandowski asked some DHS contractors to be paid in exchange for protecting and growing their contracts with the department. A representative for Lewandowski pushed back forcefully:
"This is absolutely false and did not happen — Mr. Lewandowski never demanded any payment or compensation."
Last week, Democratic lawmakers launched an inquiry into Lewandowski and whether he sought personal payments from contractors while working at DHS. Democratic senators have also opened a separate inquiry into whether Noem or Lewandowski personally profited from a $220 million ad contract that featured Noem in 2025.
These are serious allegations. If any government employee, regardless of party, leveraged federal contracts for personal enrichment, that deserves full accountability. The conservative position on government corruption has never been complicated: public service is not a profit center.
The sequence of events here tells a straightforward story. Trump fired Noem. Trump started asking pointed questions about Lewandowski's contract role. Lewandowski is now gone. That is what accountability looks like from the top of an organization.
Democrats on Capitol Hill will frame their inquiries as the reason anything happened. They launched investigations. They demanded answers. They wrote stern letters. That is what Democrats do. But the timeline suggests the White House was already moving before the congressional machinery cranked into gear. Trump was asking questions about Lewandowski's role after Noem's ouster, not after a Senate Democrat held a press conference.
There is a difference between oversight that drives action and oversight that chases headlines. Congressional Democrats have spent the last several years perfecting the latter. If the allegations against Lewandowski have substance, the appropriate response is legal accountability, not fundraising emails.
The Department of Homeland Security has a job to do. Border security, immigration enforcement, and counterterrorism operations do not pause for personnel drama. Every day spent relitigating staff controversies is a day not spent on the agency's core mission.
Mullin inherits a department that has been through a turbulent year. Noem's tenure drew scrutiny not just for the Lewandowski questions but for allegations of an extramarital affair between the two, which both have denied. None of this is what DHS should be known for.
The agency needs leadership focused on execution: finishing the border wall, processing deportation cases, cutting through the bureaucratic inertia that has plagued immigration enforcement for decades.
Mullin, a former mixed martial arts fighter turned senator, is not a man known for passivity. The department could use that energy directed at the right targets.
Lewandowski is gone. Noem is gone. The questions surrounding both deserve honest answers, and if wrongdoing occurred, consequences. But DHS has a country to protect, and the personnel page is not the most important one at the agency right now.
