Emmer Urges DOJ to Prosecute Cohen

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is calling on the Department of Justice to take action against Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's former lawyer, for alleged falsehoods and theft.

Fox News reported that Tom Emmer outlined his demands for immediate justice to be served against Michael Cohen in a letter sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday.

Emmer’s appeal follows multiple criminal referrals from various congressional committees asserting that Cohen has lied to Congress.

Michael Cohen Has a History of Lying to Congress

Notably, Cohen confessed in November 2018 to providing false information to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Emmer emphasizes that these recurring lies further undermine Cohen's credibility, especially given his key role in the current trial against Trump, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Emmer went on to describe Cohen as a habitual liar, stating that his previous deceptive actions toward Congress were corroborated by a witness during the New York v. Trump trial. This witness confirmed that Cohen had expressed dissatisfaction over not securing a position in Trump’s administration, contradicting Cohen’s earlier statements.

Criminal Referrals Intensify Pressure

This fall, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik sent a criminal referral to the DOJ concerning Cohen’s alleged perjury during a 2019 deposition. Earlier this month, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan also pushed for a criminal referral based on Cohen’s purported untruths in another 2019 deposition.

During the 2019 House Oversight Committee testimony, Cohen claimed he did not seek a role in Trump’s administration. However, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York's evidence contradicted this, showing he had indeed pursued such a role.

Adding to the complications, Cohen has admitted to stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the Trump Organization, a fact confirmed during the New York v. Trump trial. Emmer argues that Cohen’s acknowledgment of a felony doubts the prosecution’s case against Trump.

Accusations of Collusion and Bias

Emmer has also questioned the impartiality of the DOJ under President Biden. He notes the involvement of Matthew Colangelo, a prosecutor who transitioned from the DOJ to work with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Colangelo's previous employment in the Biden administration raises concerns for Emmer about potential bias.

Emmer points out that Colangelo was affiliated with the Democratic National Committee in 2018, working on "political consulting," according to Fox News Digital. Given these accusations, Emmer demands that Garland provide all documents related to Colangelo's work and clarify why Cohen has yet to face indictment despite the persistent criminal referrals.

Emmer's remarks to Fox News Digital were particularly emphatic. He asserted that Cohen is the only one guilty of any wrongdoing in Bragg's case against Trump. He pledged to use every available resource to ensure that Cohen is held accountable and that the American public receives transparent explanations about the individuals involved in this legal fray.

In his letter, Emmer summarizes the situation, fiercely criticizing Cohen's actions while defending Trump. Emmer's stand reflects a broader political battle that extends beyond the courtroom, highlighting the ongoing tensions and partisan divides within the country.

In conclusion, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer has called on the DOJ to take immediate action against Michael Cohen for his alleged false testimonies and theft. Multiple criminal referrals and past admissions of guilt by Cohen underpins Emmer's demands. As the key witness in Trump’s criminal trial, Cohen's credibility is under constant scrutiny, with allegations of bias further complicating the case.
