Ex-FBI counterintelligence leader’s downfall tied to leaks, foreign dealings, and high-profile cases

According to Just The News, Charles McGonigal, a former high-ranking FBI counterintelligence official, has admitted to leaking sensitive information about a criminal investigation into CEFC, a Chinese company with ties to Hunter Biden's business dealings. The revelation comes after McGonigal's recent sentencing for money laundering and receiving illegal payments.

McGonigal's role as section chief of the FBI's Cyber-Counterintelligence Coordination Section and later as special agent in charge of the New York field office's counterintelligence division placed him at the center of numerous high-profile investigations. His involvement spanned from WikiLeaks to the Trump-Russia probe, making his betrayal particularly concerning for national security.

Deep Ties to Chinese Intelligence Operations

McGonigal led the FBI's investigation into a devastating breach of the CIA's spy network in China between 2010 and 2012. During this period, more than a dozen U.S. intelligence sources were killed or disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

The investigation eventually led to the arrest of former CIA officer Jerry Chun Shing Lee in 2018. Lee was later convicted of conspiring to deliver classified information to Chinese intelligence officers.

McGonigal's defense team highlighted his extensive counterintelligence experience during sentencing. However, they notably omitted his involvement in the Chinese mole hunt from their court submissions.

Hunter Biden Connection Raises Concerns

CEFC, the Chinese company at the center of McGonigal's leaked information, had significant financial ties to Hunter Biden. The president's son and his businesses reportedly received millions in payments from CEFC in 2017 and 2018.

Hunter Biden referred to CEFC executive Patrick Ho as "the fucking spy chief of China" in a recorded conversation. Ho was later sentenced to three years in prison for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

McGonigal admitted to prosecutors that he shared confidential details about the CEFC investigation with an associate named "Person B," believed to be businessman Dorian Duka. This disclosure occurred while the FBI was actively investigating the Chinese company.

Controversial Role in Political Investigations

McGonigal played a significant part in the FBI's handling of politically sensitive cases. He was involved in providing a defensive briefing to Hillary Clinton's campaign regarding Turkish influence attempts. The treatment of the Clinton briefing contrasted sharply with the FBI's approach to Donald Trump. The bureau used a similar briefing as a pretext to gather intelligence on Trump and his advisor, Michael Flynn.

McGonigal worked closely with Peter Strzok on the Crossfire Hurricane investigation into alleged Trump-Russia collusion. Text messages between the two officials revealed discussions about potential leaks and concerns about their investigative activities becoming public.

Legacy of High-Profile Cases

McGonigal's career included involvement in numerous significant investigations. He supervised the multi-year probe into Huawei Technologies and its CFO Meng Wanzhou. The former FBI official also led the WikiLeaks Task Force investigating Chelsea Manning's leak of classified documents. Manning was ultimately convicted on multiple espionage-related charges.

McGonigal participated in Operation Ghost Stories, which tracked Russian deep-cover operatives in the United States. The case concluded with a prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Russia.

Impact on National Security Continues

DOJ weaponization czar Ed Martin has requested an interview with McGonigal regarding new information that has come to light. The request follows McGonigal's convictions for falsifying records, making false statements, and conspiracy charges.

The extent of damage caused by McGonigal's unauthorized disclosures remains under investigation. His deep involvement in sensitive national security matters over decades has raised serious concerns about potential compromises to U.S. intelligence operations.

The DOJ Inspector General's report on McGonigal's activities suggests there may be more revelations to come. The case highlights vulnerabilities within America's counterintelligence apparatus and the potential for insider threats to national security.
