Oracle and OpenAI have committed to building an additional 4.5 gigawatts of artificial intelligence infrastructure capacity through their expanded Stargate project agreement.
According to Fox Business, the two companies announced Tuesday their expanded partnership as part of a broader $500 billion commitment to develop U.S.-based AI infrastructure over the next four years. The expansion is expected to create over 100,000 jobs across operations, construction, and indirect roles including manufacturing and local services.
The 4.5 GW addition will bring the total project capacity to more than 5 GW of a planned 10 GW commitment. The new agreement continues the companies' original pledge to invest heavily in American AI infrastructure development over the coming years.
Infrastructure Development Creates Economic Opportunities
The announcement represents nearly a year since OpenAI CEO Sam Altman first advocated for democratic AI development over autocratic alternatives. OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane noted the timing coincides with multiple significant anniversaries in the company's AI infrastructure development timeline.

Parts of the Stargate I facility in Abilene, Texas are now operational and running early training and inference workloads. Oracle began delivering the first Nvidia GB200 racks to the site in June, enabling OpenAI to begin testing next-generation frontier research capabilities.
The Texas facility has already created thousands of jobs, with more positions expected as operations expand throughout the site. Workers for the new positions will come from more than 20 states across the country.
OpenAI has begun using the new capacity to push forward with advanced AI research and development initiatives. The operational status of portions of the facility demonstrates the project's progression from planning to active implementation phases.

The Stargate platform encompasses ongoing data center partnerships with Oracle, SoftBank, and CoreWeave, plus international investments in U.S. infrastructure through OpenAI for Countries.
