Graham Platner's growing archive of graphic Reddit posts deepens crisis for Maine Democrats

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Maine's Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Graham Platner, is facing a fresh wave of scrutiny after yet another batch of archived Reddit posts surfaced, posts containing graphic sexual remarks, dismissive comments about rape victims, and hostile language directed at military veterans. The revelations compound what has already become one of the most scandal-laden Senate candidacies in recent memory, and Democratic leaders in Washington still cannot bring themselves to cut him loose.

The posts, attributed to Platner's former Reddit account under the username "P-Hustle," date back to 2013 and 2014. Multiple outlets have reviewed the archived material, which Platner attempted to scrub before launching his campaign. Breitbart reported that the posts remained accessible through internet archives despite Platner's efforts to remove his online activity.

The content is not ambiguous. It is not a matter of interpretation or context. It is vile on its face.

What the archived posts contain

In 2014, responding to a Reddit thread asking users to share their most offensive joke, Platner wrote under the P-Hustle handle: "I was eating out my grandmother and it tasted like horse c**. So that's how she died..."

A year earlier, in a 2013 thread titled "shorts that prevent you from being raped," Platner offered this take on sexual assault:

"Holy f***, how about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not get so f***ed up they wind up having sex with someone they don't mean to? Men and women, you make a choice to consume enough of a substance to lose your self control. So if you don't want to be in a compromising situation, act like an adult for f***s sake."

That is a man running for the United States Senate telling rape victims they should have behaved more responsibly.

The Washington Free Beacon reported that the archive extends well beyond crude jokes. Platner described Army soldiers as "full of fat, lazy trash who would rather not be in uniform" in a March 2019 post. He mocked Purple Heart recipient Ted Daniels, a soldier shot multiple times by the Taliban, writing, "This video never gets old. Dumb motherf***** didn't deserve to live." He praised a 2014 Hamas raid, calling it "a d*** fine looking and successful raid against a superior opponent" and adding, "I dig it."

The Free Beacon documented that Platner posted under the P-Hustle username between 2013 and 2021 and deleted the account in August 2025, before launching his Senate bid. The timing speaks for itself.

A scandal with layers

The Reddit posts are only one chapter. Platner has also faced allegations of physical aggression from a former partner, Lyndsey Fifield, who accused him of gripping her with enough force to leave bruises, confining her to a room after a dispute, and forcibly removing her from a taxi by pulling her wrists. The New York Times reported on multiple women who recalled what they described as Platner's unsettling behavior.

Separately, Platner faced fallout over alleged sexually explicit texts exchanged with multiple women during the first years of his marriage. Newsmax reported that Platner's wife, Amy Gertner, had alerted his campaign in August about the texts she discovered on his phone, and that aides decided the matter was private. Gertner later dismissed the coverage in a selfie-style video, calling it "really shameful" that "there's a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip."

Then there is the tattoo. Platner previously displayed a tattoo featuring the Totenkopf, a skull-and-crossbones symbol associated with the Nazi SS. He later obscured it with new artwork. A separate account bearing a username similar to Platner's was also found on the messaging application Kik, a platform that has drawn criticism from child-protection advocates over its use by online predators.

A National Review report noted that a Tavern Research poll showed more than half of respondents felt "more negative" about Platner after learning of his alleged past actions and statements. Maine Governor Janet Mills suspended her own Senate primary campaign on April 30, effectively clearing the path for Platner to claim the nomination despite the cascading controversies.

Democratic leadership looks the other way

What makes the Platner saga more than a single candidate's disgrace is the institutional response, or rather, the lack of one. Fox News reported that top Democratic leaders, including Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and Elizabeth Warren, refused to publicly address the scandal when pressed by reporters.

House Minority Leader Jeffries offered a particularly memorable dodge: "I haven't seen no posts." Warren went further in the other direction, she endorsed Platner even after multiple rounds of controversial posts surfaced, defending him by saying voters should evaluate "who Graham Platner is today."

Who Graham Platner is today is a man who told Fox News Digital that his Reddit history amounts to harmless comedy. "You should read the comments in context," Platner said. "It's very clear I'm joking. It's called s***posting."

Mocking a Purple Heart recipient who took Taliban bullets is not a joke. Telling sexual assault victims to "act like an adult" is not s***posting. Praising Hamas raids is not dark humor. These are the recorded views of a man asking Maine voters to send him to the Senate.

DNC Chair Ken Martin acknowledged the posts were "indefensible, hurtful, and offensive", then immediately added that he did not think they were "disqualifying." That formulation tells you everything about where the party's priorities sit. The words are bad, the behavior is bad, the pattern is bad, but the seat matters more.

Not everyone in the party has been willing to play along. Sen. John Fetterman ripped fellow Democrats for backing Platner, and Platner's own political director, Genevieve L. McDonald, resigned over the revelations. "These statements were not known to me when I agreed to join the campaign," McDonald said, "and they are not words or values I can stand behind in a candidate for the United States Senate."

When your own political director walks out the door, the "context" defense has failed.

The archive that won't close

The full scope of the archive is staggering. Fox News cited a compilation of roughly 2,014 deleted Reddit posts tied to Platner, assembled by the Maine Monitor. The posts span graphic sexual content, anti-military remarks, and commentary that even sympathetic observers have struggled to defend. A super PAC backing Sen. Susan Collins has spent $4 million on attack ads featuring the material, and the ads practically write themselves.

Collins, who has represented Maine in the Senate since 1997, now faces a general-election opponent whose own deleted internet history has become the dominant story of the race. Schumer has refused to consider an alternative candidate, a decision that may say less about Platner's viability than about the thinness of the Democratic bench in Maine.

The Associated Press reported that Platner has attributed his posts to PTSD and dark humor carried over from military service. That explanation might cover a stray off-color remark. It does not cover 2,014 deleted posts, praise for Hamas, contempt for wounded soldiers, victim-blaming of sexual assault survivors, a Nazi-associated tattoo, allegations of physical aggression from a former partner, and sexually explicit communications with multiple women during his marriage.

At some point, the pattern is the person.

Fetterman has gone so far as to dismiss Platner as someone who does not even belong in the party. That is a remarkable statement from a senator not known for breaking with his caucus lightly. But Fetterman's objection only highlights the silence of everyone above him in the leadership chain.

What voters are left with

Graham Platner secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Maine earlier this month. He will face Susan Collins in November. Between now and then, voters will decide whether a man with this record deserves a promotion to the world's greatest deliberative body, or whether the party that nominated him deserves the consequences of refusing to find someone better.

The Reddit account is deleted. The archive is not. And no amount of "context" will make 2,014 posts disappear.

Democrats had every chance to walk away from this candidate. They chose not to. Maine voters should remember that in November.
