Hegseth abruptly dismisses Navy chief of staff

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a surprising move, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has removed Navy Chief of Staff Jon Harrison from his position, marking another significant shift in military leadership, as the Daily Caller reports.

This development, which unfolded on Friday, encapsulates a broader wave of leadership changes within the Department of War under Hegseth's direction.

Harrison's tenure as Navy chief of staff began in January, when he was appointed to collaborate with Navy Secretary John Phelan.

Unexpected leadership change

Their joint mission was to spearhead organizational reforms, focusing on policy adjustments and budget restructuring.

Harrison worked closely with Phelan to implement these changes, aiming to streamline operations within the Navy.

However, sources described his dismissal on Friday as sudden, catching many off guard, particularly at the top levels of military leadership.

Hegseth making bold moves

A War Department official acknowledged Harrison's departure, stating, “He will no longer serve as Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Navy.”

The same official added, “We are grateful for his service to the Department.”

This statement reflects a formal recognition of Harrison’s contributions during his time in the role, though, at least in the estimation of Hegseth, a change was needed.

Recent appointments, reassignments emerge

Adding to the context of this shakeup, Retired Navy Captain Hung Cao was confirmed as undersecretary of the Navy just days before Harrison’s exit.

Earlier in July, Harrison and Phelan had reassigned Cao’s key aides, setting the stage for new team dynamics.

They also planned to conduct interviews for future assistants to support Cao in his new position.

Broader context of overhaul unfolds

This firing is not an isolated incident under Hegseth’s leadership at the Department of War.

In August, Hegseth also dismissed Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse, signaling a pattern of significant personnel changes that has also included a number of other top staffers.

These actions suggest a deliberate and ongoing effort by Hegseth to reshape the military’s upper echelons that seems unlikely to slow.
