House rejects Democrat Al Green's impeachment effort against Trump

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Another impeachment attempt against President Donald Trump crashes and burns in the House, proving once again that rogue stunts rarely survive the vote.

The House of Representatives decisively voted on Thursday to table a resolution for Trump’s impeachment, with a tally of 237 to 140 and 47 Democrats opting to vote “present,” effectively sidelining the effort spearheaded by Texas Democrat Rep. Al Green, as the Daily Caller reports.

This saga kicked off on Wednesday when Green, at 78 years old, filed his articles of impeachment, pointing fingers at Trump over a controversial statement about Democratic lawmakers.

Green’s Solo Crusade Falls Flat

Green’s resolution zeroed in on Trump’s remarks, made during a Fox News interview, suggesting that Democrats who urged the military to defy what they called illegal orders could face severe consequences, including arrest or trial.

Trump quickly clarified to host Brian Kilmeade that he wasn’t advocating for execution, but rather emphasizing that these lawmakers were in “serious trouble” for their actions.

Still, Green doubled down, framing the president’s words as a dangerous overreach, though his party’s leadership clearly wasn’t buying the urgency of his cause.

Democrat Leadership Steps Back

Members of House Democrat leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, made their stance crystal clear on Thursday by voting “present” and releasing a statement distancing themselves from Green’s solo mission.

They argued that impeachment demands a national consensus and thorough congressional oversight -- neither of which, they noted, had been pursued in this case, leaving Green’s push looking more like a personal vendetta than a party priority.

“None of that serious work has been done,” the leadership stated, a polite but firm jab at Green’s haste that underscores how out of step he seems with his own caucus.

Green’s History of Disruption

This isn’t Green’s first rodeo. He’s filed impeachment articles against Trump multiple times this year, including a forced vote in June that nearly 130 of his fellow Democrats helped to table.

Earlier, in March, the House even censured Green for repeatedly disrupting Trump’s address to Congress, with ten Democrats joining in the formal reprimand, signaling bipartisan frustration with his tactics.

One has to wonder whether Green’s persistence is more about headlines than results, especially when his own party keeps showing him the door.

Republican Response Hits Hard

Republicans, predictably, didn’t hold back in slamming Green’s efforts, with the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) calling it a textbook case of obsession with Trump at the expense of governance.

“Democrats have made it clear their priority isn’t governing or helping families, it’s waging a personal war against President Trump,” said NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella, a sharp critique that lands when you see how few Democrats backed Green’s vote.

House Republican Conference Chair Lisa McClain echoed this to the Daily Caller News Foundation, noting, “All they want to do is get in the way, slow down and obstruct,” a fair point when Green’s actions seem more theatrical than substantive.

Final Tally Tells the Story

When the dust settled on Thursday, only 23 Democrats sided with Republicans to outright kill the procedural vote on Green’s resolution, while 140 pushed to move it forward. This is a split that shows even the opposition isn’t fully united against Trump.

Yet, with 47 Democrats sitting on the fence with a “present” vote, it’s evident that Green’s crusade lacked the legs to stand, let alone run, in a chamber wary of overplaying its hand.

Perhaps it’s time for Green to read the room. His relentless focus on impeachment, while spirited, risks drowning out real policy debates that Americans might actually care about.
