Ilhan Omar refuses to address police raid that turned up weapons in her son's home

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Minneapolis police found multiple weapons and ammunition inside the home Rep. Ilhan Omar's son shares with a convicted felon, and the congresswoman walked away in silence when a reporter asked her about it.

Officers executed a search warrant on August 25 at the residence shared by Omar's 20-year-old son, Adnan Hirsi, and his 22-year-old roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi, Breitbart News reported. The raid turned up multiple firearms and ammunition. Abdi, a convicted felon, is barred under federal law from possessing any firearm. He was arrested and released one day later. He now faces a weapons charge.

Omar, a Minnesota Democrat who has publicly pushed for stricter gun-control legislation, refused to answer when reporter Nicholas Ballasy confronted her in a Capitol Hill hallway. She kept walking as Ballasy pressed for a response.

A routine traffic stop led police to the weapons cache

The chain of events that led to the raid began with a routine traffic stop. Police pulled Abdi over and discovered he had no driver's license and no proof of insurance. His car was impounded. Officers later found a firearm inside the vehicle, a possession that is illegal for a convicted felon under the federal gun ban.

That discovery prompted Minneapolis police to obtain a search warrant for the home Abdi shares with Hirsi. When officers entered on August 25, they found more weapons and ammunition, Fox News reported.

Hirsi was not arrested and has not been accused of any crime. But the fact that a sitting congresswoman's son lives with a man who allegedly stockpiled weapons illegally raises questions Omar has so far refused to engage.

Abdi's criminal record extends well beyond this incident. He has been arrested ten times before. In 2024, he was convicted of a felony speeding charge after driving more than 100 miles per hour. That felony conviction is what made his possession of any firearm a federal crime.

Ballasy pressed Omar twice, she answered neither time

When Ballasy caught up with Omar on Capitol Hill, he asked directly: "What do you know about the situation, why it happened in the first place?" Omar said nothing and continued walking.

Ballasy tried again, asking whether she planned to advise her son to move away from the situation. Omar gave no response. Her congressional office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, either.

The silence is notable for a lawmaker who has vocally called for federal gun legislation. Omar has framed gun control as a matter of protecting children and communities. Yet when a weapons cache turned up in her own son's home, tied to a roommate with a lengthy arrest record, she offered nothing.

Right-wing activist Benny Johnson posted on X that the situation was "not a good look for Ilhan Omar." That may be an understatement. A member of Congress who demands tighter gun laws while declining to address illegal firearms found under her own family's roof hands her critics a contradiction that no amount of silence will resolve.

Omar's pattern of dodging uncomfortable questions

This is not the first time Omar has declined to engage with scrutiny over her personal and financial affairs. Her revised financial disclosures wiped out millions in reported assets, and she has refused to explain the discrepancies.

Separately, questions have swirled around her office operations. Omar has faced allegations that she runs her congressional office out of a community center funded with fraud-linked campaign cash.

The congresswoman's net worth has swung dramatically in public filings, from millions to near zero, with arithmetic that outside observers say does not add up. In each case, Omar has either declined to comment or offered minimal explanation.

None of those prior controversies involved law enforcement finding illegal weapons in a home connected to her immediate family. This one does. And the congresswoman's response, walking away from a camera, ignoring a straightforward question, follows the same script.

Abdi walked free one day after his arrest

Perhaps the most striking detail in the timeline is how quickly Abdi was back on the street. Despite a felony record, ten prior arrests, and a weapons charge stemming from a raid that produced multiple firearms and ammunition, he was released one day after being taken into custody.

The specific weapons charge Abdi faces has not been publicly detailed beyond the general description. What types of weapons were recovered, and how many, remain unclear. Whether Hirsi was present during the raid is also unknown.

Those gaps matter. A convicted felon living with a congresswoman's son, allegedly possessing multiple illegal weapons, arrested and released within 24 hours, the public deserves a full accounting. So far, neither Omar nor Minneapolis authorities have provided one.

Lawmakers who spend their careers demanding that law-abiding citizens surrender their Second Amendment rights ought to have something to say when illegal guns turn up in their own family's living room. Omar's silence says plenty on its own.
