Joe Biden's financial struggles exposed: Ex-president faces debt and limited opportunities

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former President Joe Biden's financial situation appears bleak as he navigates post-presidential life with significant debt and limited income opportunities.

According to Daily Mail, the 82-year-old is struggling to secure lucrative speaking engagements and faces ongoing mortgage payments that could extend well into his 90s.

Biden's financial disclosure records paint a concerning picture of his economic status. He left office with a mortgage on his Wilmington, Delaware home of between $250,000 and $500,000 at a 3.375 percent interest rate. The 30-year loan, taken out in 2013 when he was 70, won't be paid off until he reaches 100.

Post-Presidential Income Challenges

Unlike his predecessors, who cashed in after leaving office, Biden's earning potential appears limited. Many Democrats remain frustrated with his initial decision to seek reelection in 2024 before ultimately stepping aside.

This lingering resentment has reportedly dampened enthusiasm for inviting him to give paid speeches or contribute to his presidential library.

"There isn't a whole lot of goodwill for the former president in some key corridors of power, and that stems from the fact that he never should have tried to mount a reelection," a Democratic insider told the Daily Mail. "A lot of us are frustrated and even angry."

Financial Obligations Continue

Beyond his primary residence mortgage, Biden also carries a $250,000 home equity loan on his Rehoboth Beach vacation property, taken out in 2022 while still in office. This 10-year debt will need to be paid off when he reaches 90 years old.

Additional financial obligations include an open-ended line of credit at five to eight percent interest for up to $50,000 and another bank loan of up to $15,000 due by 2028.

The former president does have several bank accounts holding between $632,000 and $1.38 million, along with various investments worth tens of thousands of dollars each. Tax returns showed the Bidens earned $619,976 in 2023.

Limited Post-Presidential Activities

Biden has signed a $10 million book deal with publisher Hachette, significantly less than the $60 million Barack and Michelle Obama received for theirs.

His public appearances have been modest, including speaking at conferences for disability advocates and human resource professionals.

In a striking departure from presidential norms, Biden has been spotted flying commercial rather than by private jet. In July, travelers were surprised to see him in an airport lounge and boarding an American Airlines flight to San Diego, where he was photographed waiting in the aisle with other passengers.

Family Financial Concerns

The Biden family's financial challenges extend to his son Hunter, who has faced his own monetary struggles. According to court documents, Hunter claimed his financial position had "significantly deteriorated" and that he had "significant debt in the millions of dollars range." His artistic career has reportedly yielded limited income, with only one painting sold since late 2023.

Hunter told a court earlier this year: "I was expecting to obtain paid speaking engagements and paid appearances, but that has not happened."

While Biden is represented by a major agency for speaking appearances, his bookings appear limited compared to his predecessors. For a former president who entered retirement later in life than most, Biden's financial outlook presents unique challenges as he balances debt obligations with reduced earning potential in his post-White House years.
