Johnson thrilled over Crockett's Texas Senate bid

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Speaker Mike Johnson’s grin couldn’t be wider as he celebrates Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s leap into the Texas Senate race. The Louisiana Republican sees a golden opportunity for his party in her candidacy.

Johnson, speaking at a Capitol press conference Wednesday, expressed outright joy over Crockett’s bid to challenge Sen. John Cornyn in 2026, The Hill reported.

His delight stems from a belief that Crockett embodies the Democratic Party’s public image in a way that alienates Texas voters. “I’m absolutely delighted that Jasmine Crockett is running for Senate in Texas,” Johnson declared, barely containing his enthusiasm for the matchup.

Republican Confidence in a Red State Victory

Johnson didn’t hold back on his prediction for the 2026 election. He asserted, “We are going to elect another Republican senator in Texas,” banking on the state’s deep-rooted conservative leanings.

Texas, in his view, remains a bastion of practical thinking that won’t buy into Crockett’s platform. His certainty reflects a broader GOP sentiment that her progressive stance clashes with the state’s core values.

Other Republican heavyweights echoed this optimism with sharp commentary. President Trump labeled her campaign a “gift to Republicans,” questioning how she even holds political office with a jab at her credibility.

GOP Leaders Pile on the Sarcasm

Sen. Cornyn, the incumbent facing a primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, couldn’t resist a smirk either. “Am I hiding my glee?” he quipped to Semafor, calling Crockett’s entry into the race a fortunate turn for his party.

Comparing her to former Rep. Colin Allred, who recently bowed out of the Senate race for a House bid, Cornyn drew a stark contrast. He described Allred as nearer to a typical Democrat, while suggesting Crockett stands in a league of her own, far from the mainstream.

Johnson, meanwhile, doubled down on his desire for Crockett to gain maximum exposure. “I want her to have the largest, loudest microphone that she can every single day,” he said, framing her visibility as a boon for Republican messaging.

Crockett’s Bold Stand Against Criticism

Crockett, undeterred by the GOP’s taunts, has carved out a reputation as a fierce critic of Trump. Her campaign launch video boldly featured audio of the president deriding her as “low IQ,” turning his attacks into a rallying cry.

She now faces state Rep. James Talarico in the Democratic primary, stepping into a race vacated by Allred. Her outspoken style has already drawn sharp lines in this contest, setting up a clash of ideals.

Republican leaders, though, see her candidacy as a chance to highlight what they view as the Democrats’ disconnect from Texas values. Johnson’s reference to Crockett and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani as faces of the party drips with disdain for their shared progressive tilt.

Texas Voters Hold the Final Verdict

As the 2026 election looms, the GOP’s confidence hinges on Texas remaining a stronghold of common-sense conservatism. They wager that Crockett’s brand of politics will falter against the state’s preference for traditional policies over what they see as radical left-wing ideas.

Her campaign, while energizing some, faces an uphill battle in a state that has consistently favored Republican senators. The question isn’t just about her message, but whether Texas will even entertain it amid a chorus of Republican cheers for her failure.

For now, Johnson and his allies relish the fight ahead, viewing Crockett’s run as a strategic misstep for Democrats. They’re counting on voters to reject what they perceive as an out-of-touch agenda, ensuring another red victory in the Lone Star State.
