A reported clash between Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan has raised questions about internal dynamics within Donald Trump’s administration.
According to the Daily Mail, an article in New York Magazine cited anonymous sources claiming that Noem was upset over Homan’s frequent television appearances. Allegations suggest Noem attempted to limit Homan’s media appearances, sparking concerns about leadership cohesion at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The report alleges that Noem felt Homan was overshadowing her on immigration issues and sought to impose a “communications blackout” on him. However, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin dismissed the claims as baseless gossip.
The alleged tensions between Noem and Homan reportedly escalated to the point where President Trump intervened. Sources claim Trump called Noem and Corey Lewandowski, her de facto chief of staff, into the Oval Office to address the growing discord.
While Trump was reportedly frustrated with Lewandowski’s inability to get along with others, both officials retained their positions following the meeting.
McLaughlin strongly refuted the allegations, describing the New York Magazine report as “libelous” and accusing it of relying on anonymous gossip. She emphasized that Homan’s role as border czar is based in the White House, not under DHS authority, and that the administration remains unified in implementing Trump’s immigration policies.
Homan’s frequent media presence has been a focal point of the controversy. Since the start of Trump’s second term in January 2025, Homan has appeared in at least 38 televised interviews, averaging six appearances per month. In contrast, Noem has participated in only 14 interviews during the same period, averaging three per month.
The disparity in media visibility reportedly fueled Noem’s frustrations, with claims that she sought to restrict not only Homan but other DHS officials from engaging with the press.
However, McLaughlin countered these claims, stating that DHS officials, including Homan, regularly appear on television to discuss immigration issues.
Despite the reported tensions, the White House has maintained that the administration’s immigration policies are yielding positive results.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson stated that Trump’s team, including Noem and Homan, is working cohesively to secure the border and deport criminal illegal immigrants. She emphasized that the administration’s efforts are producing “tremendous results.”
Homan’s position as border czar, a role formalized during Trump’s second term, has roots in the previous administration when Kamala Harris was tasked with addressing migration issues. Homan’s proximity to the White House press corps has made him more accessible for media engagements, further contributing to his higher visibility compared to Noem.
While the New York Magazine report paints a picture of internal discord, administration officials have sought to downplay the allegations.
McLaughlin reiterated that the team is aligned in its mission to address immigration challenges, dismissing the report as an attempt to create unnecessary drama.
As the administration continues to navigate its immigration agenda, the reported rift between Noem and Homan underscores the challenges of managing high-profile officials with overlapping responsibilities. Whether these tensions will impact the administration’s broader policy goals remains to be seen.
