Tyler Boebert, the 21-year-old son of Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, faces five felony charges in Colorado after authorities say he filmed himself having sex with a 17-year-old girl and shared the video, a case that now drags a sitting congresswoman's family into serious criminal territory.
The Garfield County Sheriff's Office arrested Tyler Boebert on Sunday and booked him into the county jail in western Colorado. He posted a $10,000 bond and walked out the same day. The charges, three counts of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, were filed last Thursday, Colorado Politics reported.
All five counts are felonies. Under Colorado law, sexual exploitation of a child is a Class 3 felony carrying four to 12 years in prison and fines up to $750,000, along with mandatory sex offender registration. Contributing to the delinquency of a minor is a Class 4 felony punishable by two to six years and fines up to $500,000.
Tyler Boebert is scheduled to appear in Garfield County District Court on August 19.
The alleged offenses date to early 2024, when Tyler Boebert was 18. Investigators say he had sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl, filmed the encounter, and shared the video with others. He is also suspected of creating an anonymous Instagram account that posted the video alongside other explicit content depicting minors, though authorities have described him as "suspected" rather than confirmed as the account's creator.
Someone reported that Instagram account to the Silt Police Department, a small-town force in Garfield County, around February 2024. Officers questioned the girl shown in the video with Tyler Boebert shortly afterward, near the time the footage was believed to have been recorded. By March 2024, a broader investigation was underway.
The arrest affidavit runs nearly 50 pages and details the police work tracing the Instagram account and the individuals behind it. Six other people face charges in connection with the case. Their names and specific charges have not been disclosed publicly.
One of the felony counts alleges intent to deal in or distribute sexually exploitative material, Just The News reported, adding a distribution dimension to charges that already carry steep prison terms.
The sex exploitation charges land on a young man whose rap sheet was already growing. In 2024, Tyler Boebert was arrested and charged after he and several friends allegedly broke into cars and stole debit cards, gift cards, and cash. He has also been cited twice on misdemeanor child abuse charges.
The most recent child abuse citation came after Tyler Boebert's 2-year-old son wandered away from his mother's home while Tyler was supposedly watching the child. Just The News noted he is already facing sentencing in two separate, unrelated cases, meaning the new felony charges arrive while his earlier legal problems remain unresolved.
That pattern of escalating trouble makes the current charges harder to dismiss as an isolated lapse. A theft arrest, two child abuse citations, and now five felonies tied to the exploitation of a minor, all before age 22.
Republicans have faced their share of internal misconduct crises in recent months, and the Boebert case adds a distinctly personal dimension that no press strategy can easily manage.
Rep. Lauren Boebert, who has represented parts of Colorado in the U.S. House since winning her seat in 2020, issued a short statement through public channels. She did not address the specifics of the charges or the investigation.
The Washington Examiner reported that Boebert told TMZ:
"I love my son. We take these allegations very seriously and pray for everyone affected during this challenging time."
Beyond that statement, nothing in the public record indicates the congresswoman has taken further action or commented on the details of the case. The Garfield County Sheriff's Office confirmed the arrest in a Facebook post and stated that the investigation remains ongoing.
Boebert is currently running for reelection in Colorado's 4th Congressional District, which covers much of the eastern portion of the state, including Douglas County and Loveland. The charges against her son now become an unavoidable backdrop to that campaign, arriving at a moment when Republican candidates elsewhere are already navigating scandal-related headwinds of their own.
Several key questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not publicly identified the six other individuals facing charges or explained their alleged roles. The identity of the person who first flagged the Instagram account to Silt police is unknown. And while investigators suspect Tyler Boebert created the anonymous account, that suspicion has not been stated as a confirmed finding.
The New York Post noted the arrest adds a significant sex scandal dimension to Republican political circles, a characterization that may overstate the political implications but does not overstate the legal ones. Five felony counts carrying a combined potential sentence of decades in prison are not a political problem. They are a criminal crisis for the defendant and, if the charges hold, a serious failure to protect a minor.
Scandals of all varieties have tested both parties' ability to hold their own accountable. Democrats have learned that lesson in races where scandal dragged down their candidates by wide margins with voters. Republicans face the same test when misconduct surfaces in their ranks.
The broader reshaping of the Republican Party in the 2026 cycle has centered on policy alignment and loyalty. But no endorsement strategy or primary record can insulate a party from the fallout when a member's family faces charges this grave.
Tyler Boebert is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The facts alleged in the affidavit, however, describe conduct that every conservative who values the protection of children should want fully investigated and, if substantiated, fully punished. The law exists for exactly this reason, and it does not care whose mother holds a congressional seat.
