Matt Gaetz surprised by Tucker Carlson's question on AOC romance rumors

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz just got blindsided by a wild question about a supposed romance with none other than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, as the Daily Mail reports.

The eyebrow-raising moment came when Carlson revisited old gossip about a hypothetical relationship between Gaetz, a staunch MAGA figure, and Ocasio-Cortez, a leading democratic socialist, while also touching on their past bipartisan work in Congress, Gaetz’s personal milestones, and his rocky political journey.

This odd speculation first bubbled up back in May 2023 when Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld tossed out the idea of a Gaetz-AOC pairing on “The Five.”

Unlikely Allies in Congress Spotlight

At that time, Gaetz, then married, and Ocasio-Cortez, engaged to her fiancé, were actually finding common ground on Capitol Hill, teaming up on various bipartisan initiatives. Their collaboration raised eyebrows, given their stark ideological divide.

Fast forward to a recent Monday interview, and Tucker Carlson, at 56, decided to poke the bear again, asking Gaetz point-blank about the rumored fling. It’s the kind of question that makes you wonder if Carlson was fishing for clicks or just a good laugh.

“Did you ever date her?” Carlson pressed, according to the interview transcript. Well, that’s one way to cut through the small talk.

Gaetz Shuts Down Romance Speculation

Gaetz, 43, didn’t miss a beat, replying, “I did not, no,” with a clarity that left no room for doubt. If there was any lingering curiosity, he shut it down as mere playground chatter.

He even took it a step further, dismissing the notion as “childish” in his own words. Let’s be honest—pairing two political opposites like this sounds more like a sitcom pitch than reality.

But Gaetz didn’t stop at denial; he reflected on their pre-Jan. 6, 2021, dynamic, noting Ocasio-Cortez was once “incredibly chummy” with GOP colleagues. That collegiality, he claims, took a nosedive after the Capitol storming.

Capitol Fallout Changes Dynamics

According to Gaetz, post-Jan. 6, Ocasio-Cortez’s attitude toward Republican peers shifted dramatically, as if they’d sprouted horns overnight. Ocasio-Cortez, 36, has spoken publicly about the trauma she endured during the Capitol event, a perspective Gaetz seems to view with skepticism.

Gaetz’s political path hasn’t been smooth sailing either; he resigned from Congress in November 2024 after a short-lived nomination to serve as Donald Trump’s attorney general. That nomination collapsed amid a federal probe into allegations of an inappropriate relationship, though the Justice Department ultimately declined to press charges.

The fallout didn’t end there—weeks after his resignation, a House Ethics Committee report resurfaced old claims of improprieties, painting a messy picture. Meanwhile, an associate of Gaetz’s was convicted on serious federal charges, adding fuel to the controversy.

New Chapter for Gaetz Emerges

Despite the turbulence, Gaetz has pivoted to hosting a show on One America News, a conservative outlet, keeping his voice in the public square. It’s a new arena to champion his views without the congressional baggage.

On a personal note, Gaetz and his wife, Ginger, whom he married in 2021, recently welcomed a baby boy in August, marking a brighter spot amid the chaos. Even as political storms brew, life goes on.

So, while the Gaetz-AOC rumor mill might churn out clickbait, the real story is one of unexpected alliances, Capitol fallout, and a conservative figure navigating a bumpy road. It’s less about romance and more about the messy intersection of politics and personal grit—something both sides of the aisle can probably relate to, even if they’d never admit it.
