Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman's wife has shared harrowing details about the politically motivated shooting that left both of them severely wounded while they continue to recover from their injuries.
According to Daily Mail, Yvette Hoffman revealed in a message to US Senator Amy Klobuchar that eight bullets struck her while her husband was hit by nine during the attack at their home on Saturday. The couple were targeted by 57-year-old Vance Boelter, who allegedly went on to kill Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark at their home eight miles away.
Yvette bravely jumped on top of the couple's adult daughter, Hope, in an attempt to shield her from the gunfire. Both Hoffman and his wife sustained serious injuries but are recovering, with Yvette stating her husband "is closer every hour to being out of the woods."
Political hate fueled deadly rampage
Authorities believe the attack was politically motivated, specifically targeting Democratic lawmakers for their support of abortion rights. The gunman, Vance Boelter, was found with a hit list containing approximately 70 names.
Most individuals on the list were Democrats or people connected to Planned Parenthood or the abortion rights movement. Police later discovered a second hit list with more than a dozen additional names after Boelter was apprehended following an intensive manhunt.
Boelter, described by his roommate as an avid Trump supporter and Christian opposed to abortion, reportedly sent an ominous text message to his roommates before the attack. "I love you guys," he wrote. "I made some choices, and you guys don't know anything about this, but I'm going to be gone for a while."
Community rallies around wounded couple
The community has responded with an outpouring of support for the Hoffmans as they recover from their injuries. A GoFundMe campaign established by the Parent Teacher Organization at Fernbrook Elementary School, where Yvette works, has raised over $76,000 for their medical expenses.
In her message to Senator Klobuchar, Yvette expressed grief over the deaths of Melissa and Mark Hortman. "We are gutted and devastated by the loss of Melissa and Mark," she said. "We have no words. There is never a place for this kind of political hate."
Principal Jeff Zastrow of Fernbrook Elementary described Yvette as "an invaluable part of our Fernbrook community" who "brings joy, compassion and unwavering support to our students, staff and families every day." The fundraiser aims to provide immediate and ongoing support to the couple during their recovery.
Suspect's capture after intensive manhunt
The suspect managed to initially evade capture despite exchanging gunfire with police officers who encountered him fleeing from Hortman's home at 3:35 am on Saturday. Photos released by authorities showed him wearing an unsettling costume mask that covered his entire head.
Law enforcement agencies, including state troopers, FBI agents, SWAT teams, and a US Marshals Fugitive Task Force, conducted an extensive door-to-door search in rural Minnesota towns. The military-style convoy traveled in armored vehicles with rooftop snipers while hundreds of officers established command centers in the area.
Authorities located Boelter's abandoned car in Faxon Township on Sunday, along with a cowboy hat identical to the one he was seen wearing in surveillance images. After receiving more than 400 tips from the public, law enforcement finally apprehended Boelter on Sunday night, ending the intensive search.
Suspect faces serious charges
Boelter is now facing both state and federal charges related to the deadly shooting spree. Authorities have issued a nationwide warrant for his arrest on murder and attempted murder charges at the state level, as well as a federal warrant for "unlawful flight to avoid prosecution."
Prior to the shootings, Boelter worked as a pastor and was captured in video footage delivering testimony about his Christian faith during a church service in Africa in February 2023. In the video, he described naming his five children after Christian virtues – Grace, Faith, Hope, Joy, and David – calling it a testament to God's blessings in his life.
The suspect's wife, Jenny Boelter, was stopped and questioned by authorities at a convenience store approximately 75 miles from the shooting scene. Officers found a weapon, ammunition, cash, and passports in her vehicle, though she was released after questioning and reportedly cooperated with investigators along with other family members.
