Minnesota's lieutenant governor dons hijab to show support for Somali community

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan just turned a market visit into a full-blown cultural statement.

In a video shared on YouTube by Somali TV of Minnesota on Dec. 25, Flanagan donned a hijab and delivered heartfelt praise for the state’s Somali migrant community while shopping at a local market, amidst a backdrop of federal fraud probes and immigration crackdowns, as the Daily Caller reports.

President Donald Trump announced in November 2025 that Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota would be terminated, citing concerns over welfare fraud. It’s a decision that has sent shockwaves through the community, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement now stepping up operations in Minneapolis to target unauthorized migrants.

Federal Investigations Uncover Massive Fraud Schemes

The stakes couldn’t be higher as federal investigations have unearthed fraud schemes tied to Somali immigrants, with losses pegged at a staggering $1 billion, and some estimates climbing to $9 billion. The Treasury Department is even digging into claims that funds from these schemes may have flowed to the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.

Multiple federal programs were exploited in these frauds, according to officials, and the Justice Department is actively prosecuting several cases. Meanwhile, state employees have accused Democrat Gov. Tim Walz of retaliating against whistleblowers who raised alarms about these schemes.

Gov. Walz, for his part, admitted on NBC’s Meet the Press that Minnesota “attracts criminals,” a candid if not eyebrow-raising confession. Yet, in the same breath, he urged the public not to vilify the Somali community.

Flanagan’s Market Visit Sparks Debate

Enter Lt. Gov. Flanagan, who stepped into this charged atmosphere with a gesture that’s hard to ignore. Wearing a hijab during her market visit, she made a visual and verbal stand for the Somali community.

“Salam Alaikum. My name’s Peggy Flanagan. I am the Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota, and I’m really honored and humbled to be here with all of you today,” she said, as captured in the video by Somali TV of Minnesota.

“I am incredibly clear that the Somali community is part of the fabric of the state of Minnesota,” Flanagan continued. That’s a bold line to draw when federal agents are knocking on doors, and fraud numbers are making headlines.

Balancing Support with Serious Allegations

Flanagan’s remarks encouraged others to support Somali businesses and stand by immigrant neighbors. It’s a call for unity, no doubt, but one that lands awkwardly when billions in fraud are under scrutiny.

On the flip side, President Trump has been far less diplomatic, claiming the influx of refugees has “destroyed our country.” It’s a harsh verdict that paints with a broad brush, ignoring the complexity of immigration challenges.

The fraud allegations are no small matter, with multiple programs targeted and potential ties to terrorism being investigated. It’s a scandal that demands accountability. Minnesota’s leadership can’t afford to look the other way.

Navigating Tensions in Minnesota’s Future

Yet, amidst the crackdowns and investigations, Flanagan’s gesture at the market aims to humanize a community under fire. Her wearing of the hijab and public support signal a refusal to let policy disputes erase personal connections.

Gov. Walz’s plea to avoid demonizing Somalis adds another layer to this saga, reflecting a desire to separate criminal acts from an entire demographic. But with ICE surging into Minneapolis and fraud cases piling up, that separation becomes a harder sell to a frustrated public.

So, where does Minnesota go from here? Balancing community support with the need for rigorous oversight is no easy task, especially when trust in state leadership is shaky. One thing’s clear—gestures like Flanagan’s won’t quiet the storm, but they might just keep the conversation going.
