Miss Austria 2024 Lucia Sisic dead at 22 after lifelong battle with heart condition

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Lucia Sisic, the reigning Miss Austria 2024, has died at just 22 years old, a young woman who endured seven heart surgeries starting at birth and used her public platform to advocate for others with congenital heart defects.

Mission Austria, the organization that runs the Miss Austria pageant, announced Sisic's death Monday in a tribute posted to its Facebook page. No cause of death has been confirmed. But the news landed with particular weight given what was publicly known about Sisic's health: she had lived her entire life with a congenital heart defect and underwent her first operation immediately after she was born.

Seven surgeries in 22 years. That was the medical reality behind the crown. Sisic never hid it. She spoke openly about her condition in interviews and on social media, framing her childhood not as a tragedy but as the thing that forged her.

Sisic turned a difficult childhood into a public mission

In a 2024 interview with Austrian outlet Heute, Sisic described a childhood defined by hospital visits and exclusion from ordinary activities. BBC News reported that she told the outlet plainly what that looked like:

"Sports weeks took place without me. My childhood was simply different, but it also made me strong."

That same year, the year she was crowned Miss Austria, Sisic posted on Instagram thanking the medical professionals who had kept her alive. The post, translated from German, carried a directness that cut through the usual pageant polish:

"Thanks to the medical staff and the dedicated doctors, who time and again saved my life through their tremendous efforts, I have overcome many difficult moments and been able to lead a fulfilling life."

She won the Miss Austria title in 2024. No subsequent pageant had been staged since her crowning, so she remained the reigning titleholder at the time of her death.

The loss echoes other recent deaths of young public figures that have reminded audiences how quickly a life in the spotlight can end.

Mission Austria called her loss a shock

The tribute from Mission Austria, signed by CEO Kerstin Rigger and her husband Jörg, did not mince words about the organization's grief. The post, translated from German, opened with a line that read more like a family's reaction than a corporate statement:

"It is with great shock and deep sorrow that we have learned of the passing of our Miss Austria 2024, Lucia Sisic."

The Riggers added that Sisic "will always remain a part of our Miss Austria family" and said their "thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and all those close to her during this difficult time."

Herzkinder Österreich, an Austrian charity that supports children with heart conditions, also paid tribute on Facebook. The charity described itself as "deeply saddened by the untimely death" of Sisic and wrote that "at just 22 years old, she left us far too soon."

A charity that knew her story called her a source of courage

Herzkinder Österreich's tribute went further than condolences. The charity described Sisic as someone who understood the weight of growing up with a congenital heart defect, not from the outside, but from lived experience:

"Lucia herself was a true child at heart. A young woman who knew what it meant to grow up with a congenital heart defect, to endure surgeries, and still to pursue her own path with courage and joy."

The organization said it would remember her "as a warm-hearted, joyful, and impressive young woman, and as an adult child who wanted to give courage to others affected." For a charity built around helping kids navigate the same medical battles Sisic fought, the loss was personal.

Young lives cut short always sting. The recent death of 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling during a race in Portugal carried the same gut-level unfairness, a young person with everything ahead of them, gone.

Key questions remain unanswered

No cause of death has been confirmed. The specific nature of Sisic's congenital heart defect, beyond the general description used by the charity and by Sisic herself, has not been publicly disclosed. The exact date, time, and location of her death have not been reported.

What is known is the outline of a life shaped by medical struggle from its first moments. Seven operations. A childhood spent watching other kids do things she could not. And then a decision to step into the public eye and use the platform not to hide the scars but to show them.

Lucia Sisic did not waste the time she was given. Twenty-two years was not enough, but she made every one of them count.
