Priest crushed to death by falling crucifix at livestreamed Mass in Ecuador

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A Catholic priest in Ecuador was killed when a heavy wooden crucifix toppled onto him during a livestreamed Mass, a tragedy caught on camera as worshippers screamed for help.

Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari was celebrating Mass at Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil when the large wooden cross mounted on the wall above the altar gave way and struck him.

New York Post reporting describes the fall coming roughly half an hour into the service on Saturday. The priest was later declared dead the same day. Emergency crews raced to the church after the collapse.

Guayaquil is Ecuador’s largest city. The parish is also known as Perpetual Help church in the Central Vicariate. Sánchez Molinari belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic order founded in 1732 and active in some 80 countries.

Worshippers’ screams filled the live feed

The Mass was being streamed live, so the collapse played out for anyone watching online. Video captured the chaos in the sanctuary as people rushed toward the altar.

A woman in the congregation can be heard crying out:

"Father, Father... call an ambulance"

Fox News reported that the crucifix struck the priest while he was preparing Communion. Worshippers moved in to help as the stream kept running.

Church officials have not given a public explanation for why the heavy wooden crucifix came loose. The cause remains unclear.

Archdiocese confirms the priest’s death

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed Sánchez Molinari’s death and issued a statement of mourning. The fatal Mass came one day after the anniversary of his ordination. His former parish also offered tributes.

In its announcement, the archdiocese wrote:

"Our dear Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari... has departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory."

A similar church statement identified him as the parish priest of the Perpetual Help church in the Central Vicariate and said he had “departed to the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and His glory.”

No named church spokesperson was attached to the release beyond the institutional wording. No further medical or legal details on the manner of death have been made public beyond the declaration that he died later that same day.

Sacred space, sudden end

Sánchez Molinari had been addressing parishioners both in the pews and over the live stream when the cross fell. The fixture that should have stood as a fixed sign of faith became the instrument of his death in full view of the camera.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene after the collapse. What units arrived and what they did on site has not been detailed in the available accounts. No arrests, charges, or official findings on the mounting of the crucifix have been reported.

The live broadcast continued on social media even as the emergency unfolded. Shocking video of the incident circulated afterward, though platform details and original post text were not provided in the coverage.

What is known is spare and stark: a parish priest at the altar, a heavy wooden crucifix above him, a sudden fall, screams for an ambulance, and a death declared before the day ended. What is not known is why the cross came down.

Faith does not cancel gravity, and sacred walls still need bolts that hold. When they fail, the loss is real, public, and final.
