Rahm Emanuel Torches His Own Party Over Transgender Policies and Collapsing Test Scores

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Rahm Emanuel, the man who served as Barack Obama's chief of staff and Bill Clinton's political director, just called his own party insane.

In a video posted to social media this week, Emanuel delivered a blunt autopsy of the Democratic Party's cultural priorities, arguing that Democrats abandoned core constituencies to chase fights they could never win. The word he kept returning to was "insane."

"We lost the plot. We as Democrats nationally, from Latinx to defunding the police to police organizations are all racist to bringing a set of cultural wars to our schools, we are on the losing side of those cultural wars, full stop."

This isn't some fringe figure lobbing grenades from the outside. Emanuel sat in the West Wing. He ran Chicago. He built the political infrastructure that got Obama elected. When a man with that résumé says the party lost the plot, the party lost the plot.

The Title IX Betrayal

According to the Daily Caller, Emanuel reserved his sharpest criticism for the Democratic Party's embrace of biological males competing in women's sports, framing it as a direct betrayal of one of the party's own signature achievements.

"I remember fighting for Title IX. The reason we are champions in women's sports in the Olympics and soccer, hockey, etc., is Title IX."

"Why would you undercut the premise of Title IX with the ability of trans men playing in women's sports? To me, it's insane. It's baffling. You're undermining one of the great accomplishments we as a country, but also spearheaded by the Democratic Party, Title IX, and we're undercutting it."

He's right, and conservatives have been saying this for years. The examples are not abstract. In 2022, Lia Thomas, a biological male, competed in the NCAA championships and won the 500-yard women's final. In 2024, several college teams elected to forfeit matches against San Jose State University's women's volleyball team rather than compete against a biological male on the roster.

Women didn't fight for decades to earn equal athletic opportunity only to watch it handed to men who claim a different identity. That Emanuel now admits this tells you how far the damage has spread inside the Democratic coalition.

Bathrooms Over Reading Scores

Emanuel didn't stop at sports. He turned the knife on the party's obsession with identity politics in schools while academic outcomes crater.

"You are worried about bathroom access and locker room access. Why don't you focus on classroom excellence? You have 50% of our kids not reading at grade level. Well, they can just say we can do both. You've proven you can't because you've permitted a 30 year low in reading and math scores, and nobody seems to be calling the whistle on this."

Half of American children cannot read at grade level. Reading and math scores sit at a 30-year low. And the Democratic Party's energy went to policing which pronouns teachers use and which bathrooms students enter.

The defense Emanuel preemptively dismantles is the one Democrats always reach for: "We can do both." He flatly rejects it. The results are in. They couldn't. They didn't. They chose the culture war agenda and let children's futures rot.

This is a point conservatives have hammered for years, usually to accusations of bigotry. It sounds different when Obama's chief of staff says it.

The 2024 Receipts

Voters noticed all of this before Emanuel did. During the 2024 presidential election, President Trump's campaign ran ads featuring Kamala Harris discussing how she pushed "behind the scenes" for transgender prisoners to receive sex changes. The ads were devastating because they didn't need embellishment. They just showed the candidate in her own words.

Harris never found an answer for those ads because there was no answer. The policy was indefensible to anyone outside the progressive bubble, and the electorate made that clear.

What Emanuel is describing isn't a messaging problem. Democrats didn't lose because they failed to properly explain their position on biological males in women's sports. They lost because the position itself is wrong, and voters know it.

Too Late to Matter, Too Honest to Ignore

The instinct here is to welcome Emanuel to the party and hand him a name tag. But conservatives should be clear-eyed about what's happening. Emanuel isn't converting. He's trying to save the Democratic brand by jettisoning the baggage that made it toxic. He wants the party to get smarter about which fights it picks, not to abandon the ideological project underneath.

Still, there's value in the admission. Every time a Democratic insider confirms what the right has argued for years, it makes the media's old "Republican culture war" framing harder to sustain. It wasn't conservatives who put biological males on women's medal podiums. It wasn't conservatives who decided bathroom policy mattered more than whether kids could read.

Democrats built these policies. Democrats championed them. Democrats punished anyone in their ranks who dissented.

Now one of their own architects calls it insane. The rest of America figured that out a long time ago.
