Trump says Democrats already gave up Ilhan Omar’s House seat

Reading Time: 4 minutes

President Donald Trump told a Florida crowd Democrats have already conceded Rep. Ilhan Omar’s seat after prosecutors listed her under a different name in a federal court filing.

Speaking Friday in Fort Myers, Florida, Trump framed the filing as a party surrender and told allies to carry that message to House leadership.

“The Dumocrat Party has just conceded the seat of the former Ilhan Omar from the lovely country of Somalia,” Trump said, directing gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds and Sen. Ashley Moody to inform Speaker Mike Johnson that Democrats had surrendered the Minnesota seat.

Omar remains a sitting member of Congress. Democrats have issued no formal concession. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries instead blasted the president’s remarks as baseless personal attacks.

Newsweek reported that prosecutors, in a federal court filing submitted Wednesday, referred to the Minnesota Democrat running for reelection as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The outlet said it obtained the filing.

Trump ties the filing to her oath and her seat

On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social that the name used to win election and take the oath was not her real one, and that the alternate surname matched Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the man long described in public accounts as her former husband.

“It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress, but rather, it’s an entirely different name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, and that her last name is, incredibly, also the exact name of her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the person they said she married and had children with.”

At an Iowa rally, Trump went further. He said she used a fake name to be sworn in, assumed she must resign at once, and claimed Republicans had picked up a House seat. He also called her a longtime scammer and described Somalia as a place with no real government.

Those lines fit a wider pattern of hard pressure from Trump on Omar, including earlier comments that she could face jail or deportation and that he viewed her as a disgrace.

Omar denies the name claim in blunt terms

Omar rejected the premise the next day on X. She said her name has always been Ilhan Omar and accused Trump of reaching for her whenever the news turns bad.

“Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine. So let’s make it crystal clear. My name has always been Ilhan Omar.”

A spokesperson told Fox News Digital the claim was “completely false” and that Ilhan Omar is her real name. After the filing, Omar also posted that the president was laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through what she called the most corrupt Justice Department in American history.

In a Wednesday interview with Chris Hayes, Omar addressed the older marriage allegation tied to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. She said people claiming she introduced him as her brother were random and that the account was insane. Asked if she was related to Elmi, she answered, “Not to my knowledge.” She also said she did not know the people making those claims.

Public biographical material cited in the same reporting lists Ahmed Nur Said Elmi as a British citizen married to Omar from 2009 through 2017, now a doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, with earlier academic ties in South Africa and Kenya. Omar has long denied the brother-marriage narrative Trump repeated.

She jabbed at Vice President JD Vance’s own name history as well, telling critics to focus on what their vice president’s real name is. Reporting notes Vance was born James Donald Bowman, later used James David Hamel, and legally took Vance before graduating from Yale Law in 2013, honoring the grandmother who helped raise him.

Jeffries calls it propaganda after a DHS search

Jeffries answered on Saturday. He denounced “unhinged personal attacks and baseless accusations” and said Democrats “aggressively oppose the weaponization of the federal government against Congresswoman Omar, who continues to work hard on behalf of her constituents in Minnesota with strength and dignity.”

“After lawlessly sending his violent DHS machine to Congresswoman Omar’s home earlier this month, the President is once again peddling sick propaganda against her at a moment when political violence is surging.”

That referred to an earlier Homeland Security action this month. Agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant in the Washington, D.C., area tied to an ongoing federal criminal investigation. DHS gave no other details. Trump said he had “nothing to do” with the search. Omar said she believes he had “everything to do with it.”

The clash lands in a midterm season already thick with national figures trading blows, much like when Obama opened his midterm push by blasting Trump on the trail.

No vacant seat, and a filing still short on public detail

Nothing in the available record shows Democrats yielding the Minnesota seat. Omar is still in Congress and still running for reelection. She is described as the first and only Somali-born lawmaker to serve in the U.S. House.

The court paper’s full caption, docket number, charges, and complete text were not laid out beyond the “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” phrasing Newsweek highlighted. Absolute calendar dates for the Wednesday filing, Thursday posts, Friday Fort Myers speech, and Saturday Jeffries statement were not provided, only the sequence of weekdays.

Trump’s Fort Myers appearance also fits a stretch of Florida crowd remarks on other fronts, including when he told a Florida audience U.S. ships would handle Cuba after Iran-related moves.

Newsweek said it emailed Omar’s office and the White House for comment outside normal hours. No on-the-record replies were detailed in the account.

Trump has kept pressing election and legitimacy fights in public, including when he argued he retains the right to seek another term after saying 2020 was cheated. Here he treated a prosecutors’ naming line as proof Democrats had already folded a House seat, an assertion the minority leader rejected outright while Omar held her ground on her name.

Voters can read a court alias line, a president demanding resignation, and a party still seating its member. Accountability starts with clear names, clear records, and leaders who answer hard questions instead of waving them off as propaganda.
