New Jersey influencer dead in Zanzibar: family demands answers as fiancé held by police

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Ashly Robinson, a 31-year-old social media influencer from the Philadelphia area, died on April 9 in a Zanzibar hospital after being found unresponsive in her luxury hotel room, just days after celebrating her birthday and getting engaged on safari. Her family now calls the death suspicious, and local police are holding her fiancé for questioning.

Robinson, known online as Ashlee Jenae, had traveled to Tanzania for her birthday. She turned 31 on April 5. What began as a dream trip, complete with a proposal from her partner, 45-year-old Joseph Isaac McCann, ended with Robinson dead and McCann's passport suspended by Zanzibar authorities.

The case has drawn attention not only because of Robinson's online following but because of the sharp gap between the story her social media told and the grim sequence police have described. That gap is where the family's questions begin, and where investigators have so far offered few answers.

A birthday trip that turned fatal

Robinson and McCann arrived at the Zuri Hotel in Zanzibar on April 4, AP News reported. The trip appeared celebratory. Robinson posted a video on Instagram of McCann proposing during a safari with Serval Wildlife, a luxury ecotourism resort. "Still taking this in... somewhere in Africa," she captioned the clip.

Her last Instagram post featured photos and videos from her birthday celebration, feeding a giraffe surrounded by rose petals spelling out "HBD Ashlee." She wrote: "Chapter 31 and I'm exactly where I need to be."

Within days, she was dead.

Police told NBC News, in an account reported by NBC Philadelphia, that their investigation revealed Robinson and McCann had a fight on April 8. The hotel separated the couple into different rooms that night. Witnesses told police the couple had been quarreling frequently throughout their stay.

After being moved to her own room, Robinson asked a hotel worker for help with a phone charger. When the worker later returned to Robinson's door and received no answer, the worker used an emergency key to enter.

Police said the worker found Robinson attempting to hang herself. She was rushed to a local hospital. Robinson passed away on April 9 while undergoing treatment.

The Washington Times reported, citing the Associated Press, that a hotel worker found Robinson unresponsive in a closet with a belt around her neck. She was transported to the hospital and died the following day.

Family calls the death 'suspicious'

On April 12, Robinson's family shared a statement on Instagram. They described the trip in warm terms before pivoting to grief and unanswered questions.

Robinson's family wrote:

"Surrounded by beauty, love, and wildlife, she became engaged during a safari, an unforgettable moment that marked the start of a future she was so excited to build. But just days later, that dream turned into our family's worst nightmare."

The family added that Robinson "was found unconscious in her villa and was rushed to a local hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later." That description, "found unconscious", is notably different from the police account, which described a hotel worker discovering Robinson in the act of hanging herself. Whether that difference reflects a deliberate choice of words or a dispute over the facts remains unclear.

The family's statement used pointed language, calling the circumstances "suspicious." In cases where a partner's explanation of a woman's death doesn't align with the evidence, families are often left fighting for transparency from investigators, sometimes across international borders.

The family also said:

"At this time, there is an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ashley's suspicious passing. Although we have many questions, we are placing our trust in the officials in Zanzibar and are working closely with them as we seek clarity and answers."

They described Robinson as "vibrant, full of life," and said she "had so much ahead of her." A GoFundMe page has been created to help the family cover travel costs, funeral arrangements, and unexpected expenses.

McCann held, passport suspended

Police said McCann continues to be questioned by investigators. His passport has been suspended, a step that effectively prevents him from leaving Tanzania while the probe continues.

Zanzibar's Deputy Director of Investigations, Zuberi Chembera, refused to comment, saying only that investigations were ongoing. Police have not publicly named McCann as a suspect or a person of interest. But the combination of his detention, the passport suspension, and the reported disputes paints a picture that investigators are far from finished.

What exactly happened inside that hotel room on April 8 remains the central question. The police account describes a hotel worker intervening in what appeared to be a suicide attempt. The family's language, "suspicious passing", suggests they are not satisfied with that narrative. And the reported pattern of quarreling throughout the trip raises its own set of questions about what led to that night.

Cases involving Americans who die overseas under murky circumstances often drag on for months or years. Families face the challenge of navigating foreign legal systems with limited leverage and incomplete information. When someone is found under circumstances that don't add up, the distance between what officials say and what families believe can widen fast.

What remains unanswered

Several basic facts have not been made public. No one has identified the hospital where Robinson was treated. The specific Zanzibar agency or department leading the investigation has not been named in public reporting. Police have not disclosed whether McCann has been formally classified in any legal capacity, suspect, witness, or otherwise.

The family's characterization of the death as "suspicious" has not been explained in detail. It is unclear whether the family has independent information that contradicts the police timeline or whether the word reflects their broader unease with the circumstances.

Robinson's social media presence, the engagement video, the birthday post, the images of a young woman enjoying what should have been one of the best weeks of her life, makes the contrast with the police account all the more jarring. A woman who wrote "I'm exactly where I need to be" was, days later, found unresponsive in a hotel room after a fight with the man who had just proposed to her.

The investigation in Zanzibar is ongoing. The family has said they are cooperating with local officials. McCann remains in the country, unable to leave.

A 31-year-old woman flew halfway around the world for her birthday, said yes to a proposal, and never came home. Her family deserves a clear, honest accounting of why, and so far, they haven't gotten one.
