Shivon Zilis says Elon Musk ended their romance with no warning

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Shivon Zilis says Elon Musk ended their years-long relationship with no warning after loving texts just days earlier, leaving the Neuralink executive grieving in public on X.

Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis posted a lengthy message on X saying the billionaire cut off their romance abruptly, describing a whiplash she framed as going from in love to let go in a week.

Hours earlier, the account Big Tech Alert flagged that Musk had stopped following her on the platform he owns. The Daily Mail reported the sequence and said it reached out to both Zilis and Musk. Musk has not commented.

Zilis, 40, is the mother of four of Musk’s children and has long worked inside his companies. She called the split sudden and said she is hurting while still cheering for him.

Loving texts came days before the split

She attached a screenshot of messages from September 24 that still read warm. After breakfast together, Zilis wrote that it was wonderful to see him and that she loved him very much.

Musk replied in kind. He wrote that he loved her too and said he would have invited her to a White House state dinner for China’s president if he had realized significant others were included, noting a prior Beijing dinner had not.

Zilis answered that the note meant a great deal. Less than a week later, her public tone had changed. On September 28 she posted a short line: “New day, new life.” The longer Friday post followed the unfollow notice.

High-profile relationships can turn fast, a pattern also seen in coverage of an Alina Habba whirlwind romance that moved into wedding plans under a bright public light.

Zilis puts the heartbreak in her own words

In the Friday post, Zilis did not claim a public fight or a clean legal break. She described personal loss and gratitude in the same breath.

Zilis wrote on X:

“it’s hard to go from in love to let go in a week.”

She went further on what the relationship had meant to her:

“I’ve loved him more than life itself and he’s taught me 100 lifetimes of knowledge and made my cup overflow with life meaning, so there is a lot of loss, but luckily we created four beautiful little loves of my life,”

She added that the children make every day the best day of her life and said she hopes they can be “great friends and coparents.”

Another passage cast her role as steady support. Zilis wrote she was glad she got to show Musk “how it feels to be deeply understood, nurtured, and peacefully loved with stability and gentleness,” and that she loved being “that counterbalancing place of safety.” She said she will miss him dearly.

She closed with a blessing rather than a blast:

“I’m hurting, but care deeply about E and will always be cheering for his happiness. God speed, Elon, the world is lucky to have you.”

She also described him as a “tortured soul.” None of that substitutes for Musk’s own account. He has not given one.

Heartbreak stories often show people leaning on faith and work to get through the wreckage, as in the account of how Karen Waldrup survived divorce while keeping her footing.

Four children and a long paper trail at work

Zilis and Musk share four children. Twins Strider and Azure were born by IVF in November 2021. News of their daughter Arcadia surfaced in June 2024. Their son Seldon Lycurgus followed in February 2025. Musk, 55, has 14 children in all, with four women.

Their history runs through his companies. Zilis first met Musk through OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015. She later served as a project director on Tesla’s Autopilot team from 2017 to 2019. At Neuralink, Musk’s brain-implant startup, she has held executive roles including director of operations and special projects. It is not immediately clear whether she keeps those posts after the split.

In testimony earlier this year as a key witness in Musk’s case against OpenAI, Zilis described how the relationship began. She said it started as a one-off at a corporate off-site and turned romantic around 2016. Toward the end of 2020, when she planned to have children as a single mother, she testified that Musk offered to make a sperm donation on a platonic basis. He later called her his “partner” from the stand. She also testified that she lives in Austin, Texas, and that Musk often stays at her house when he visits their children.

Public snapshots had shown a couple still linked on the social circuit. They were pictured holding hands arriving at White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino’s wedding at Mar-a-Lago in February. Other images placed them with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington and with their children at White House-related events.

Viral personal drama can swamp a career in a single cycle, the same way a Manhattan law firm partner’s viral video triggered leave and a storm of workplace speculation.

What remains unanswered

Musk follows roughly 1,400 accounts on X. Unfollowing Zilis was a small technical act with a loud social signal. It does not explain motive. Zilis says the relationship ended with no warning. Musk has offered no public reply, no timeline of his own, and no statement on their working relationship at Neuralink.

The record, for now, is her post, the September 24 texts she shared, the September 28 line about a new day, and the unfollow flag that preceded her longer statement. Private coparenting will matter more than the feed. Four young children do not need a running public argument. They need adults who keep the noise down and the routines steady.

Fame does not cancel ordinary duty. When a romance breaks, the test is whether the parents put the kids above the timeline.
